[comp.sys.amiga] questions

LMC-TRANS@GUNTER-ADAM.ARPA (Vaughn Wasem) (11/29/86)

I have seen it mentioned in several places that Kickstart 1.2 has been put in
ROM and that the extra memory is freed up for the system. If anyone knows
how to do this, could they load up the info on this net? Sure would like to
get my hands on that already-bought-and-paid-for RAM.

I also have something called KickBench, if anyone is interested. As it's
name implies, it is Kickstart and Workbench on the same disk. The disk
has at least one major drawback in that once loaded you can't take the
disk out of the drive. I.e., KickBench needs to stay put. This drawback
alone is enough to keep me from using it on a regular basis, but on occassion
it is nice to load the two at once.

I have heard of a program called Speedy3 -- apparently public domain -- that
reportedly improves the performance of Transformer. Can anyone tell me where
I can download this program (source if you have it)? Also, since I'm on the
subject of Transformer, does anyone know why it doesn't run under WB 1.2 and
has anyone ever seen a communications program run under Transformer? I have
tried Procomm, Qmodem, and a comm program I wrote myself to run under Trans-
former and have had very little luck. I can get three or four characters out
(or in) the port before it locks up the whole system. If you can help, please
let me know.

Could someone from C-A give us the address to order our official Commodore
o.k.'d copy of WB 1.2?

"kickbench" is probably the greatest amiga hack since popcli. i could
give up popcli and go back to an extra "newcli" in my startup-sequence, but
going back to a 2-disk boot would be painful.
if you want to be able to take the kickbench disk out of the drive,
there are several options:

don't re-arm the disk ("kick") in your startup-sequence; wait until
you're ready to power-down, then do it manually.

dis-arm ("unkick df0:") the disk before removing it, then re-arm
    after you re-insert it.

keep a workbench disk in df1:; let the startup-sequence on your
kickbench disk transfer "control" to df1: via "assign"s, then re-arm.
after that, the kickbench disk is no longer needed, and you can remove
it until the next coldstart. this returns you to 2 disks, but you can
still walk away for the few minutes it takes for the boot process to
complete, and come back to a system ready to run.

    i typically use a variant of the third option. i have a 1-meg add-on.
my kickbench startup-sequence fills ram:c, ram:l, ram:devs, and ram:libs,
assign's those directories, and re-arms itself. if i'm doing development,
i replace kickbench with my aztec C workbench; otherwise i can remove it,
since it won't be needed anymore, or leave it in to silence the clicking.

Vaughn,
I've tried quite a few IBM communications programs on the
TRANSFORMER. All programs, except one, had the problem that you
mentioned, where the com port would freeze until the next AMIGA reboot.
The program that worked, was very interesting. Due to the slowness of
the emulation software, a 1200 baud connection actually displayed at
about 30cps on your screen. This was dissapointing, and I haven't really
pursued IBM communications especially since I received some usable
native AMIGA comm software.
I would be very interested in locating this legendary speedy3
to see if it really helps. My use of the Transformer is now mostly
limited to compatable word processing (from work) and database
management, which runs at slow, but usable speeds. However, with
the PC Utility included in 1.2, it will now be possible to transfer
native/IBM files back and forth, so that a document should be able to be
carried home on a 5.25 diskette, transferred to the Amiga, worked upon
by a native word processor such as Textcraft, transferred back to the
5.25, where it will be able to be used on the IBM at work. Sound great
in theory, lets see what happens in practice.
Please let me know if you locate speedy3...

re: kickbench

i received an email request for help in making a 1.2 gamma kickbench.
if you already have the "makeboth.arc" kickbench kit (available on
better BBSs everywhere), all you need is a patch1.2g file:

A friend of mine had a few questions I couldn't answer. Perhaps someone
out there in netland can:

1: When is the release date of the next Manx compiler? (3.4?)

2: Is there a Visual 550 emulator (or something of the like) out there
    somewhere?

3: What is the current status of Caligari? (The 3-d animation/modeling
program) The article in Amigaworld gave no mention as to price
    or availability.

4: Is there a place that would offer a sustancial discount (ie > 15%)
on memory expansion if 10 or more units are bought at one time.
(Perry K: Would ASDG be interested?) oh ya, these boards should have
pass-thru capability and be at least 2meg if not expandable, otherewise
    be fairly simple to upgrade.

5: What are the prices of (cheap) 1meg drams going for? Where are there
    good deals?

I think that should be enough for now,

I spoke to Jack Lerner of Octree yesterday. I got the impression
that they would be ready to ship around mid-spring since he agreed
to do a demo around March. Aegis on the other hand mentioned that
their 3D package by Alan Hastings wouldn't be ready for "4-6 months"
which isn't too far behind. Should be fun stuff!

I have two questions for the people at commodore.
1) Can you provide a termcap entry for AMIGA terminal emulation in
amigaterm, or is it not worth the effort.

2)The narrator device is very nasty. I had this neat idea, "I wonder if I
can get this thing to speak french" I asked myself. So, I looked in the
manual, and it talked about ipa and nice things like that. "Neat" I thought,
"a piece of cake". Then I looked closely. What it provides is something
called arpabet. Not only doesn't it provide the phones I need to generate
French, it doesn't even provide those needed to speak <BrE> (I.e RP). For
example, it is not possible to get it to say 'pot'. It assumes that this
word should be pronounced 'paat' (as in <AmE>), and there is nothing on
God's green that you can do about it.

I would like to suggest that the next release of intuition support a
narrator device with a full set of IPA phones. This will make the usefulness
of the machine in educational markets greater as it will be able to
pronounce foreign languages. It will also mean that those of us who find
other accents euphoneous will be able to have our machines speak them.

If you are talking about AmigaTerm, the program we supply with our
Amiga modems, a normal VT-100 termcap works perfectly.
(if you are talking about another program with the same name,
they shouldn't be using that name! :-) )

Good idea; but it will take Workbench space (its pretty full now!), time
as well as money, so we can contract with the people who did the first
narrator and translator device to do new ones.
(Probably have to do translator as well.)
So, maybe sometime, but not real soon, and no commitments.

(If anyone's interested in special versions that speak foreign languages,
for special projects, send me mail and I'll try to put you in touch with them.
Their rates on consulting might be within your budget. Or, if they
get the idea that it would be a viable comercial product...)

I had this interesting idea, and in fact now have enough software tools
put together to at least test the feasibility of producing a narrator
device that does it's speech by playing back sampled phonemes instead
of synthesized ones.

Though I can now cut and paste sampled 'phonemes' fairly well, and even
'drive' them from a text string, I have yet to actually attempt to accumulate
the required quantities of phonemes in order to actually hear how it will
sound. One problem, is I don't even have the best model it would appear
from your posting, how can I find out what the full set of IPA phones
are?

And there are other potential problems. I'm not sure really how to
'meld' from one phoneme to the next effectively if it turns out that
simple splicing is not good enough. And even if simple splicing IS
good enough, many of the phonemes are so short that cutting them
out by listening can be pretty tough. A phoneme taken out of context
begins to sound like nothing, or noise, or whatever, especially when
you're listening to it over and over while you cut and paste.

I've been wanting to take the soundtrack from one of these UFO movies
I have on video which was narrated by Rod Serling (and maybe a few old
TZ's) and see if I could accumulate enough Serling phonemes to come up
with a speech program. I realize there are all sorts of copyright problems
with such a program, but I want to first find out if it is even feasible.

Unfortunately, there's a lot I don't know about speech synthesis and
phonemes etc., and it's been a back-burner project anyway, but since the
subject came up, I'd like to know if anyone out there knows any good
references on the subject that might help out.

Thanks,

This would not be nearly sufficient. The problem is not just a lack of
phonemes; the narrator speaks English (of a very particular variety!). It
knows about intonation and relative stress levels, for example. Adding more
phonemes would not be sufficient. This is the fundamental difference between
phonemes and phones. The narrator device takes phonemes, which are a
description of the sounds in an utterance relative to a given language and
only specified as well as needed to distinguish them from other sounds in the
same language.

What would really be needed is for the narrator to output data which is not
language-specific which another device could speak, such as perhaps the audio
device. Then there would be three stages for language creation:

Translator - English text to phonemes (not used by most serious
					       programs)
Narrator - phonemes to phones (used by nearly any <whatever dialect
				       that is> English program)
Audio - actual speech production (used by absolutely all programs)

A bunch of questions:

1. Exactly what does the INSTALL command do?

2. What does DISKDOCTOR actually do to the disk? Does it repair corrupted
sectors?

3. Does there exist a program for the Amiga that will search for bad
disk sectors and lock them out so that they won't be allocated to other
files? In the days of CP/M, there was a program called FINDBAD which
would put all the bad blocks into a single file, so those blocks
wouldn't be reallocated.

4. A wierd bug, which I haven't figured out how to reproduce at will yet:
Using vt100v2.6 (wonderful program) and also having microemacs (can't
remember which version) also present in memory, suddenly the situation
occurred where not all of the menus would pop down. Some would, some
wouldn't. Also, even though the menu wouldn't pop down, I believe the
system actually though it was there, since selecting the menu (the
menu header did invert) and the moving the mouse down a bit and releasing
the button actually did something. Anyone know what could be going on?

No, it fixes the pointers and checksums so that the files can be read
without errors. It also scribbles block 0 so that you won't try to use
it again. The reason being that although it has made all the files it
can find readable it *HAS NOT* made the file system consistent. Personally,
I strongly reccomend you reformat after using it.

This is one of the symptoms of intuition running out of memory. Other things
happen as it gets more serious, windows stop moving, icons stop highlighting
until you can run anything with out stopping something first.

What is the general feeling of posting new product data on the net? I
have a project I am working on, and it might be useful to others. I am
considering cleaning it up and marketing it, but I don't know if there
is any interest in the product, and I wonder if it is wrong to post a
description, probably with hype, to see if anyone would like it?

Has anyone noticed a problem with Lattice v3.10 printf?

Does anyone have the Toshiba P321 Printer driver that is on Compuserve?

What does my Supra-Drive's Supra-Boot disk have wrong with it when my

It seems too much to AllocAllThatMem() and InitAllThoseStructures()...
just to display some boxes as in the ROM KERNAL Manuals.

Various unrelated questions:

1) (for a friend) Is there a public-domain program to download Amiga fonts
to an HP Laserjet ? On a fish disk ?

2) I have a drive(A1010) which has a tendency to "create" R/W errors if
used to write files and sometimes has difficulty with some disks. Is there
an adjustment that I could make to help this, or failing that can I at
least have it repaired ?

3) In the same vein, IS THERE ANY WAY TO ABORT a write request which has
failed due to a R/W error. I can press Cancel (or Retry) till I'm blue in
the face, remove the disk ... All I generally manage to get is a Guru :-(
And failing that, is it at least possible for your application to regain
control after such a problem ? Would setting pr_WindowPtr to -1 do the
trick ?

That's all for now.

I haven't seen anything in the pd that will work the Laserjet. Everything
I have seen printed looks pretty crappy (compared to softfonts).

There are a few relatively cheap commercial products out that do a *great*
job of controlling the Laserjet. JetSet by C Ltd. (~ $70) lets you take
full control of the Laserjet. They also sell softfonts for ~ $36 per set.
JetSet will create data tables for CityDesk and WordPerfect.

C Ltd. will release JetMaster soon which will let you do global editing of
softfonts.

I've been very happy with JetSet and CityDesk. Who needs Postscript??

(I have no association with C Ltd. or Microsearch -- I just like their
products)

Hi folks,

Just a couple of quick questions:

1) When using the TEK emulation on VLT and Atalk3 the graphics are in
2 colors. Setting more colors on the Amiga side still displays it in
2 colors. Is there a way to get the host to display graphics (graphs
through SPICE) in more than two colors!

2) When using ICONX in WB1.3, the status window always shows up in the
same place. Using INFO and changing the window specifications doesn't
change anything! Any ideas?

3) I heard that the Microbotics 8-UP! card doesn't work with the new
motherboards with the Super Agnus chip! Any comments. Commodore had no
comments at the WOC, and Dr. Oxide had a few words to say on the whole
thing!

There, that should boost me up a few points on the HALL of FAME!

By 2 colors do you mean 1 for the plot and 2 for background, or 2
colors of plot and a third for background?

What are you using to generate the TEK input? I have used VLT with hsplot
(plotting utility for hspice) in 4 and 8 color mode. When the plot contained
5 colors and VLT was in 4 color mode it just wrapped around, so
color 4 = color 0.

Your plotting package may think it's outputing to a monochrome tek
tube. In that case there will be no color codes in the input and it
won't matter what you set VLT to.

It just might.

If I recall correctly, SPICE plots have drivers for Tek 4010/4014
(monochrome) and not for any of the color Tek terminals, so you'll be limited
to two colors in any case.

Hello World, I have acouple of questions that have been biting me
for quite awhile now.

	1) Sometimes my CLI gets all 'fuzzed up' when I have the bridgeboard
doing its thing. I thought I heard domething about ctr-o, but that
doesn't seem to work... I'd like to know (so would a few buddies)
why this happens and how to get rid of it. What exactly does the
	Ctrl-o s'pose to do anyway?

	2) What's the deal on Janis 2.0? Does it work with the xt-bridge
or is it just me? :) Can u mix 1.0 areads with 2.0 awrites?
When will the upgrades for xt-ers be out ( in Canada )?

Finally, today we had a couple of Commodore reps at School giving
the students demonstations of the 2500/Amax/At-bridge. It was nice
	to see...

Does anyone have any predictions for Arati ? From where I see it,
users are extremely unhappy (customer support,upgrades,etc...). I
don't see any of their new products ( if ever they come out ) cat
-ching on... Maybe someone has a different view? Some users are
actually figuring out how a multitasking OS is a must nowadays...

Is that Walker Demo II-trailer really a preview to something larger?

	Thanx to all who respond!!!

When I had an XT bridgecard and Janus 1.0, my Amiga keymaps would foul
up as well. I stumbled onto the CTRL-ALT combinations to clear things
up (it's been a while, I believe that was the combo, maybe add the SHFT).

I've only heard it works with the XT BB (I have the AT now) but I can't
say for sure. The 2.0 release has quite a bit different than the 1.0,
so you may want to wwait till you can get the whole shoot'n match.

Ok, I have some questions that I need answers for. Does anyone have any
information about the "Flicker Master"? I think this is a glare screen
that is supposed to reduce the flicker. Did anyone buy it and have any feed
back on it?? If it reduces it somewhat and does a better job at reducing
glare, let me know. I think I need a glare screen anyway and if you have
any recommendations, respond!

I subscribe to the Atari Z-Magazine board(boo! hiss! ok, enough), because
I had an Atari computer(XL) and like to see what the other guys are doing.
I don't know how many of you are familiar with the Z-Mag, but it is like
a bi-monthly publication which is spread on the BBS's and networks and provides
press-releases and news articles relating to Atari ST's. They also have reviewsof software. Is there anything like this for the Amiga?? If there is, I am
really interested because although magazines(that you can buy on the newsstand)
provide enough articles to keep me busy for awhile, I find the information
a little behind in time. If you think about it, the articles in the regular
mags might have been written at least a month or two in advance. This Atari
Z-Mag format is good in the sense that it gets published twice weekly(means
recent news and articles) and that it is a good way to inform the Amiga
comunity. If there aren't any, perhaps we can start one with some Amiga
hackers on this message board and gather information from around the nation
and we can distribute it on BBS's and other sources. ANyone interested??

I am looking for a digital sampler for my Amiga 2000. I have seend perfect
sound but don't have any feed back about it. I am planning to use it with
Aegis Sonix.(Perfect sound is supposed tobe compatible with Sonix)
How long can I sample?(I have the super agnus with 1 meg chip)

I picked up one of these things at a show for about $15 and believe it or
not they do work. They don't completely eliminate the flicker but they can
reduce it substantially. Careful color selection also helps. I regulary
use my terminal programs, word processor and directory utility programs
in interlacemode with no flicker.

I would recommend it.

When you buy ProWrite, the disk contains two versions of the program.
ProWrite opens up an interlaced screen. ProWrite MR opens a non-interlaced
screen, which stretches everything vertically, and (obviously) doesn't
display as much at a time. The two programs are otherwise identical.

You can also adjust the screen colors to reduce flickering to a minor
annoyance.

Try looking at Word Perfect. I don't know much about word
processing but it sounds like theirs is farely solid. I also
think somebody here or someplace mentioned that they had a

These would probably be the Rom Kernal Manuals from Addison-
Wesley. It sounds like the new v1.3 ones are very good and
being v1.3 they shouldn't be out of date - yet. V1.4 is
probably (hopefully) right around the corner and it sounds
like there will be enough changes to warrent a new release
of the manuals. I'm debating whether to wait for new ones.
I have a couple of the Abacus books and they are very good
at detail and examples, but I'm not that wild about their
writing style. Rob Peck's book "Programmers Guide to the
Amiga" seems to be a favorite of many although it is slightly
dated and doesn't have as many examples as the Abacus books.
Rob does do a very good job (IMO) with discussion on the
	principles.

> 3)	I have heard that there are some problems with the

It isn't that there are some problems but that there is a lack
of a MMU on the 68000. It seems that since most personal
computers are not multi-tasking they do not need MMU's and the
bigger machines that do have multi-tasking run on a chip that
does have or supports memory management. We are sort of (happily
for the most part) caught in the middle. I don't think there
are that many problems with machines crashing from poor memory
management, and when there is it is more a problem of poorly
written applications that the OS itself.

First, what is SCRAM?

Next, what is the difference between the Amiga slots and the IBM slots in the
Amiga 3000? Does any given card have to use one or the other, or are there
cards that can use either? For example, if the coprocessor slot is taken with
a 68040 card, and the video slot is taken with a 24bit graphics card, will there
still be room for a genlock (or are genlocks external?). As you can see, I know
very little about all this, and can't afford it anyway, but I'm curious, and I
can dream, can't I?
Thanks!

I have a couple of questions that I hope someone could find some answers
to, or at least pointers to info about.

1. Autoconfig (tm)
	How does it work ?

2. RAD:
How does the Amiga know if and where a RAD: disk is present when
	it boots ?

3. SCSI
What signals does a SCSI drive need/send.

>I have a couple of questions that I hope someone could find some answers
>to, or at least pointers to info about.

>1. Autoconfig (tm)
>	How does it work ?

Briefly, a signal is sent out on the Zorro bus, which is intercepted by the
first autoconfig card in the chain, and at the same time, a READ is performed.
If the data from the READ makes sense, more stuff is read, and the program
querying the bus knows from the data, what kind of card it is, and what
resources it requires. The program then tells the card what address(es) it
occupies, and the card latches that information for any further communication.
At this point (give or take a few things), the card stops answering to the
autoconfig address and passes the config signal on to the next card in line.
This continues until there are no more cards to be config'ed.

For more detailed information, see the A500/A2000 Tech Ref Manual, and the
expansion.library autodocs.

>2. RAD:
>	How does the Amiga know if and where a RAD: disk is present when
>	it boots ?

A special structure is placed in memory. On bootup, this structure is located
and acted upon, and in the case or RAD:, will cause the OS to set up a RAD:
device again and protect the memory used from being stomped on.

For more information, see the autodocs and includes, especially the parts about
ROMTAGs.

>3. SCSI
>	What signals does a SCSI drive need/send.

8 bits for data, and a variety of control signals. The spec for SCSI is
relatively complex. Basically, the control signals determine the interpretation
of the contents of the data bus, which can be taken as selection, commands,
messages, status, or data.

For more information, see the SCSI specification, or data sheets for any of the
SCSI conttroller chips.
