an interesting thing happened today. i called up Pacific Telephone to change the FCC equip. reg number from a modem to a telephone. (before you were advised (required?) to report the use of a modem for ringer DB equivalence to the phone company. see a Hayes modem manual for details) the phone rep. who answered told me that the phone company no longer REQUIRED OR USED THE SUCH INFORMATION! i.e., they dont seem to care what device it is! why is this? does the East Bay (of San Francisco) have a new system that can adjust the ringer for any equipment within reason? what does this do to their ability to notice modems? on the one hand, not telling them that you dont have a phone connected removes vital info from their hands. on the other hand maybe the self-adjusting phone trunks can detect modem ringers? chongo /\../\ p.s. comments are invited in net.followup
