[comp.sys.amiga] A-Max II - first test results

FILLMORE@EMRCAN.BITNET (09/05/90)

I just got my copy of A-Max II in the mail. During my initial testing
I found these bugs:

  1) File Transfer II utility:
     a) AmigaDOS file list won't scroll
     b) Error -80 - Low level disk read/write error on many AmigaDOS disks

  2) Sound support:
     a) sound is very fuzzy
     b) sound only on left channel

I will try the hard disk support this weekend as soon as I can set up
a partition (dump and reload files).

I tried to set up an AMAX II partition on my ST277N with a Supra WordSync
controller -- no go. Called Supra tech support and they told me that they
were "having some problems" getting the WordSync and AMAX II to get along
together. They said that they expected to have it working in a couple of
weeks, took my phone number, and said that they'd call me. But for now, no
AMAX II partitions with a Supra WordSync controller.

Although the scroll bar doesn't work, the file list can be scrolled by
selecting a file and dragging the highlight bar outside (above/below) the
requestor (this also causes the scroll bar thumb to follow).

I didn't notice this, but there was one annoying bug. If the mac system
was in DF0:, the disk would be ejected before the program was finished
setting up, and would have to be re-inserted and ejected again.

There are some improvements in this version not mentioned in the ads:

   1) The control key finally works correctly.
   2) The external mac drive is now recognized as drive #2 (making
it possible to eject disks with shift-amiga-2).
   3) MacEnvy (system information) now reports the emulated mac as
a Mac Plus instead of a Mac 512e (now more programs that check
machine type will be able to run).
   4) MacEnvy also reports the presence of a new clock chip (256 bytes
instead of 20). So now, longtitude and latitude can be set (at
least until shut-down). The mac clock is now regulated by Amiga
timing circuitry, so the clock will be accurate once it is set,
even on systems without real-time clocks on the motherboard.
   5) System 6.0.5 now works.
   6) The boot program now runs under Workbench 2.0 (couldn't test this).

The price paid for these improvements (beside upgrade cost):

   1) The emulator overhead is now 192K of RAM instead of 128K.
   2) The ability to switch video modes from the mac boot screen by
clicking the right mouse button is gone.

The only major bug I found was the inability to use an arbitrary-sized
overscan screen (set in the system prefs using 'morerows', and selected
with the 'workbench' option under the A-Max program screen). The ROMs
would load correctly, but the Mac boot screen was trashed. This wasn't
much of a problem, since the built-in 672x460 mode works, and produces
an excellent display. But I would appreciate hearing from anyone who
might know why this problem might have occured.

I haven't had any problems using the file transfer utility - under what
circumstances do these errors occur?
As far as the sound support goes, I haven't done that much testing, but
according to the documentation, some sounds may produce undesirable
results. In any case, I don't think one should expect them to be too
close to what they are on a real Mac, given the vast differences in the
sound hardware. I guess since the Mac Plus (which A-Max emulates) only
has mono sound, Simon Douglas may have decided to use only the left
sound channel. This seems to be more of a design decision, rather than
a bug.
Please post any results you have with the hard drive support!

In response to A-Max II not working in overscan-workbench screens: Hmmm,
mine works fine. I run a 710x472 workbench screen and A-Max II works fine
with the "Workbench" selection of screen mode. I can finally get a full sized
macintosh screen that is 710x472 to fill my whole screen. Ony problem I have
is with the coloring scheme. I want to boot it from my hard drive but I don't
want ot use their default colors. So, it uses my first two colors from
workbench. But the problem is that my first two colors are grey and black,
respectively. This gives a revers macintosh screen that has black menus.
Very *ugly* looking. Does anyone know where in the A-MaxStartup file the
numbers for the default color is stored? I would like to change the default
values to regular Macintosh screen colors. Thank you ahead of time.

Well, I don't know about the default colors, but how about using the program
SetAmiga to change your preferences right before entering AMAX? You could
make an iconx script to do it automatically before entering AMAX.

(SetAmiga (SetPrefs) is on fish 157 and lets you make a library of
system-configuration files which it can recall at an instance)

Or as a second solution: I have written a little program in Lightspeed C
which lets you change the colors AMAX uses. I'd like to make the program
a desk accessory or, better for your use, an Init, but I don't know how.

I have not had problems with the colors, but have experienced a couple other
problems.
When I try using the new Amiga File transfer utility my system copies the file,
then crahses.
I also have had some problems with formatting disks.

I will check these more closely, contact ReadySoft, and if anyone else has
these problems I will let you know my results.

BTW the sound and hard drive support seem to work great. My only problem is
Finder won't save my volume settings, and some sounds (with Sound Master) are
staticcy. Oh Well it's still a lot better than no support.

Does anyone know if Amax2 supports the Xetec Fastrak hard drive controller
for the Amiga 500? I'm seriously thinking of getting Amax2 and any help
would be appreciated.

I ported Dark Castle and Beyond Dark Castle to the Amiga from the Mac and
I found that Mac audio and Amiga audio differ slightly. One uses unsigned
sample data and the other uses signed. This means that in order for sounds
digitized on the Mac to sound correct on the Amiga that each byte of the
sound sample data must be exclusive or'ed with hex $80 or the sound will
be garbled/staticy. Otherwise, Mac samples should sound Excellent on the
Amiga (at 11.1 KHz). I am not sure if AMax II automatically makes the
desired conversion, and frankly I am not sure if it is possible for AMax
to do this at all.

Thanks for the reports on AMaxx II.
