[comp.sys.amiga] Hard drives and the A500?

BYRNE@muppet.dnet.ge.com (09/12/90)

Hopefully in the near future I will be purchasing a hard drive system
for my A500 (A500, 1 external floppy (the big clunky Commodore one :-), A501
board, stock power supply). I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations
or horror stories they would send me. Thanks.

I too will be buying a hard disk soon. I have been thinking about the
Supra Drive 500XP with a 40 MB disk and 2 MB of expansion RAM. I saw it
advertised for $749 from a mail order place. Does anybody know anything
about this disk drive?

Look in the recent Creative Computers add. It lists a 48 megger for the
500 for only $400. If money isnt your limiting factor I hear golem is
bringing one to the US that can achieve 850k/sec, or around there anyways.
I don't think it was supposed to be expensive at all, just I haven't heard
when its available.

The drive seems to work fine. Unfortunately, I have not had a lot of time
between work and school to do anything extensive with it, wrt putting
software on it, putting it through some serious paces, etc. But having
come up from using a C-128 6 weeks ago, a 3 Meg A500, two drives with a
40 Meg Hard drive is a dream system! :)

Based on net.advice, I ordered my drive from Safe Harbor, in Wisconsin.
They have added another satisfied customer to their list, as it came
in about the right amount of time, and the price was right. (I actually
got charged $20 LESS than the price I was quoted on the phone.)

I purchased a Supra 500 XP from Montgomery Grant a few weeks
ago. So far I have been very happy with it. I bought it with
512K and added the other 1.5 Meg myself. The hard drive itself
is made by Connor. Connor hard drives are used in the Mac
portable, and have a very good reputation for being fast, reliable
and low power. According to Supra, no external power supply is
necessary, and I haven't been using one.

The drive has an Amiga bus pass-through, as well as an additional
SCSI port, for adding more SCSI peripherals (like an additional
drive.) A "game switch" on the back allows you to disable the
hard drive, while keeping the expansion memory available for games
which can use the memory, but not the hard drive.

The hard drive came formatted with FFS, and with 1.3 already installed.
Getting the drive up was as easy as plugging it onto the side of my
Amiga, and turning the Amiga on. My Amiga autobooted from the hard
drive in a fraction of the time it takes to boot from floppy.

So far I am a satisfied customer.

I bought a GVP 30 mg. HD about 1 year ago. It is very reliable,
moderately fast and was easy to install.

	There are only 2 problems.
1: cost COST CCOOSSTT!!! (way too much) Close to $800 with
the auto-boot.

2: The fan sounds not unlike a jet engine winding up for
take-off. You get used to the noise, but the neighbors might not. :) And
if you are watching TV, listening to the radio, etc... It can be VERY annoying.
