[comp.sys.amiga] abcfd20 archive

vglante@ucscb.ucsc.edu (Vigilante) (09/19/90)

Instead of starting with a gripe first, I will start with a complement. Thanks
to everyone that has a part in managing, maintaining and contributing to the
amiga section. I wonder if the other machines have such devoted users.

Now my suggestion. As others may have experienced, the sheer volume of files
in the incoming/amiga directory has made wading through a listing a time
consuming task if you are searching for just the new programs, an old one you
know is there somewhere, but have forgotten its name (although mget vlt*, etc
does help), or you are just looking for something you have not gotten. It would
be nice if there were more structure to the incoming directory. Sorting the
programs into utilities, games, demos, would be quite time consuming for the
keeper of the archive, so I would like to suggest that something like the
following occur.

Programs could be sorted on date uploaded. IE there could be a sep90 directory
for programs sent this month and a xxx90 for each of the previous months this
year. Once the programs have been moved into their proper directories the
administrator of the archive would have to do little from then on if the
contributors would put their programs into the proper directories. It would
be nice if there was a listing in the main directory of what was contained in
each directory. The list could be updated each month through the use of a time
related script.

Remember this is a suggestion, not a demand, and I would like to see other
suggestions, especially better ones. If you have a complaint with my post
mail me. I would also appreciate if someone could tell me how to edit my
kill file to get of "RE:" messages as most of them are inane and don't contain
useful information or dicussion.
