I currently have an A1000 with 512K and an external 5 1/4 , 3 1/2 drive. I'm looking into getting a 20-40MB hard disk. With all the expansion products I've seen, I'm still not sure what my options are. It seems I could go with a 20MB drive from say Supra, Xebec, or CLtd, as I understand it, these are SCSI drives, that come with their own SCSI controllers. I could get (I think) an SCSI controller from Com-spec for about $249 which also says 0MB ram. Does this mean I can put my own chips on it and get memory expansion? Can I just buy an off the shelf SCSI drive and plug it in and watch it work? The Supra, Xebec, CLtd options seem a bit steep, the best you can do is about $750 for a 20MB. Is there some way I can put an ST-506 on my A1000? If so what are it's limitations? I can pick up a GOOD ST-506 1/2 hight ~30ms access drive for about $400 (30-40MB) thru a dealer/friend. Can I use it? Is there something out there that I could buy that would give me ST-506 controller with expansion memory? My last choice is to buy one of the Supra, Xebec, or CLtd drives as I think I can get the drive itself much cheaper if I only could be convinced there is an interface out there that I could plug in and have it work. I have a flyer from COMSPEC I got at AMIEXPO, it looks like I could get what I want, they even auto-boot, has anyone got one of these? What was the $$ and how does it work? Any suggestions info would be appreciated.

I will (hopefully) soon be in the market for a harddisk. If you have one (or have collected information about them), could you send me a summary about what you found? I am looking to a good reliable harddisk with auto-booting, etc (you've heard it all before). Thanks for any information. /avery Avery Shealey shealey@ernie.berkeley.edu or conn@boa.gatech.edu Avery Shealey School of Information & Computer Science, Georgia Tech, Atlanta GA 30332 Internet: shealey@ernie.berkeley.edu CSNet: shealey%ernie@berkeley

I need some QUICK help here. I have to make a decision on a hard disk controller in the next two days (I have to order it Monday). The one I think I want is the Supra. Any really bad experiences, caveats, just general info would be greatly appreciated. (I wanted the GVP but GVP won't sell w/o a disk accompanying it.) Thanks in advance.

Are you sure that GVP will not sell their controller without an accompanying hard drive???? A friend of mine bought a GVP controller sans hard drive last spring. He then purchased the hard drive separately. Perhaps you should recheck your info- rmation.

Hi A friend of mine and I are planning to buy "big" SCSI harddisks. We got a brochure from Corporate Systems Center describing some of the harddisks they sell. We are eyeing a Miniscribe 110Mb 17ms harddisk for US$495. Can somebody please comment on the price? (I don't know the current harddisk prices) Anyway, CSC do offer discounts for "bulk" purchases (like 5). So I'm wondering if anybody out in the net is also interested in buying harddisks. (They have harddisks from 20 to 677M harddisks.) Alternatively, does anyone know a cheaper source of harddisks? (I would really like to have a bigger one except for $$$) Please reply by e-mail to c186br@volga.berkeley.edu Thanks. Peng-Toh.

I bought one of those drives at that price from them early this past summer
for use on a system at the office. It's been working fine 24 hours/day since
the date of installation. Note those drives are refurbished; but I needed
>80 MB capacity in a half-height package at a price for which I could get a PO
cut by my company and that drive met the requirements. For reference, that
drive is 5-1/4" half-height SCSI and works on both Amigas and Macs; I shoehorne
d
it into an Apple 20SC case (and tossed the Seagate 20MB SCSI drive that was
originally in the case). If you use Apple HD cases, be aware that Apple, too,
miswires the SCSI cabling in violation of the ANSI specs ... they do NOT daisy
chain the cable (probably explains why they're no longer on the SCSI committee)
