I'm looking into buying a 2400bps modem, but I don't have that much money. From some of the mail-order firms, I've found Supra modems (external) for as low as $99. I know that it's Hayes-compatible. I've also seen something called the Aprotek 2400 MiniModem. Any thoughts on it? Is it reliable? Is it Hayes compatible? I can get my hands on it brand new for < $80! +------///-+------------------| BRETT KESSLER |------------------+-\\\------+ | /// | consp11@bingvaxu.cc.binghamton.edu | \\\ | | \\\/// | consp11@bingvaxa.BITNET | \\\/// | | \XX/ | (PeopleLink) B.KESSLER | \XX/ | +----------+-----------------------------------------------------+----------+

I have it for the Commodore 8bit family (C-64, C-128) and I use my C-128 frequently with it. of course, once I get a better term prog then v94n of JRcomm (no REAL vt100 emulation. THe prog can't handle scrolling to the top of a fvfile and updating the screen. I have to do my up direction and cntrl-l to redraw so I can see what I am doing. You listening, J. Radigan ? was it fixed in v1.00 or later ? I ain't payin till I know it's fixed!!!!!!!) I won't need to use it except as a backup and when I logon from my hometown during vacation. my Amy does SOME telecomm now. I can d/l at least. I do recommend Aprotek's modem. they make good stuff. * // Only /\ |Lord Zar,Commander Of All He Surveys|Stay Alert! Trust * *\\ // /--\MIGA |(and hater of spaces near commas.) |No One! From what I've seen of the Aprotek 2400 baud modem, I would suggest spending the extra $20 for the Supra (or any other brand). My friend has one of these Mini-Modems. It is about the size of a C-64 ROM cartrige (remember those things? :) It has about a 6 inch 25-wire ribbon cable (non-shielded) connected to a DB-25 connector for the serial port. It has only one phone jack in it (i.e. you must buy a splitter yourself for $2.50 if you want to connect your phone to it as well). It has no external power supply, draws all its' power from the port. This could be very dangerous on a A500 that doesn't have a beefed-up power supply. Especially if you are running an external drive, RAM expansion, etc. It also does NOT have all the Hayes command S registers in it to set modem parameters. And unlike the Supra, it does not have the non-volitile memory to store you S registers even if it is off. (The Supra can store 4 phone numbers in its current revision, as well as Parity, BPS, Stop Bits, etc...) In fact we were having problems with it connected to an A2000 running a BBS, where we had no problems with one of those no-name brand 2400 baud modems that Computer_Direct sells (used to be Protecto). I got my Supra 2400 e modem from Computability in 1 week after sending a personal check. It was $112 including a very well shielded 6-foot RS-232 cable (as thick as the printer cable). It was well worth the cost. --
