[comp.sys.amiga] CD-ROM DRIVE!!!

sk2x+@andrew.cmu.edu (Sun Kun Kim) (09/05/90)

Well, I just got my October issue of Amiga World and what a PLEASANT
surprise on page 43! Xetec has an ad for a CD-ROM drive for the Amiga.
$599 for the internal(A2000-A3000) and $699 for the external model. It
includes a CD called 'Fish and More' which includes the Fred Fish
library(upto #360) and additional PD software totally over 400 megs!
So, I guess this just isn't a rumor anymore, but a reality. You can
also play regular audio CD's. Just thought you guys might be interested
in this with all this talk of Fred Fish disks on CD-ROM. Party on dudes!

You know, a marketting concern about CD-ROMs just hit me.

ROM means "read-only" (duh!). Therefore, the average user of the CD-ROM is
going to be totally reliant on vendors for the production of data to put on
these things. In the PC or MAC market, I could see there being a significant
number of vendors to support that, but can we really expect that in the Amiga
market.

What's the possibility of there being some sort of standard for these CD-ROMs
such that PC or MAC CD-ROMs would be useable to the Amiga CD-ROMs (information
as well as media)?
