It's simple:  three letters per digit on American phones, starting with two.
(Zero is for operator, one has no letters.)  Omit 'Q' and 'Z'.

It looks like this:  2=ABC, 3=DEF, 4=GHI, 5=JKL, 6=MNO, 7=PRS, 8=TUV, 9=WXY.
