[comp.sys.amiga] WordPerfect Amiga!

crazyrat@disk.UUCP (@jap) (09/15/90)

Anyone out there got a bought copy of WordPerfect Amiga that they would
like to sell me? I can get it for 89 bucks, but I can't see the use of
shelling out that much money for as much as I will be using it. The only
reason I want it is to be able to take my work home and use the same word
processor that I have there.

Thanks all!

@jap

What is the current version of WP for Amiga, anyway?

If you mean, what's the *major* version number, it is still 4.1,
though it is a little different from WP 4.1 for MSDOS, that's
essentially what you get.

If you mean what minor version or update, I think mine is sometime in
fall of 1989. Type the HELP key to see what yours is.

Amiga WP is OK, but it has several annoying misfeatures, IMHO. If
I had it to do over, I'd get ProWrite .

Actually, I recently heard a rumor that WP version 5.1 has been released
for the Amiga. Is there any truth to this? (Not that I'd buy it - I
think WP is a dog - but it would lend a bit of much-needed reassurance
to this Amiga user.)

The latest version for WordPerfect for the Amiga is 4.1. To find the
"release" of your copy, run WP and hit the help key. There is a date
on the help screen. This is the date of the release. The lastest
release is 9/29/89.

There is also a "release" and date associated with PRINT, and WP
Library.

I called WP for support last week and asked about a newer version and
they said "not yet". This is the *only* problem with Amiga WP that I
can think of. WP just doesn't give the Amiga version enough
development effort.

WP's advantage is that it is available on multiple platforms and that
the support is better than first rate. We run WP here on Dats General
super-minis (where WP got started), PC clones, and occasionally Macs.
I use WP at home on my Amiga because the files are compatible. We will
probably install WP on some new Suns we are getting, for those who
can't handle GNU Emacs :-)

I guess I am a satisfied customer because I use WP for word
processing, not desktop publishing, and the support really is
excellent.

I talked to WordPerfect yesterday and was told a maintenance revision
for WB2.0 is to be expected in mid Oct.

In his Oct. 90 Roomers columns, Amazing Computing's "Bandito" says that
WordPerect is considering "WordPerfect 5.0 with a true graphical
interface and a version of PlanPerfect for the Amiga" ....

He goes on to say that CBM is lobbying hard to see that this is done.

Keep in mind the the Bandito has been wrong before.....

Saw a blurb about WP in ?BYTE boasting ( NOw I rememnber its for
the Windows version... ) that under W3.0 you can now
open 10 windows on a file or multiple files.

I fell down laughing!!!!

I've done the ten window trip since '86 on my 1MB A1000 !!!!

Shows you where BYTE is at, at least.

I like WP too and hope thy do upgrade our product.

I remember a rumor from years ago that Word Perfect 5 was first
developed on the Amiga, and then ported to MSDOS. Any body know
if there was any truth to that oldie?

I called WordPerfect after hearing the same rumor several weeks ago.
According to their Amiga Technical support, the new version is version
4.2 and is due out in October, 1990. I inquired about a 5.x version
and she told me that although there had been many requests for it,
there was currently no announced plans for an Amiga version.

Sorry folks...

Amiga WordPerfect may not be the best of word processors, but you sure
can't beat their technical support.

Heck I thought Amiga WP 4.1 was the equivalent of WP 5.0 for somewhat
less capable machines.

The big news in the newer releases of WP (5.X) is that it supports
graphics included into the file.

whoopie, right?

Actually, there are a number of functions in 5.x that aren't in 4.x.
The most important one to me is the table of contents generation.
Another thing is the graphic symbols for drawing boxes and such.
And one thing I *REALLY* want in WP on the Amiga is the ability
to type in a document without the Reveal Codes window disappearing!
