Hurrah >Hurrah!!!! slightly more detailed info: the DJ500 is out, shipping, and costs just a tad less than the DJ+ (retail...but since the rebate program is over, net cost is higher.) The DJ500 has more built in fonts (CG Times, and another one) and does more of its regular features in landscape mode. It is not faster. The new ink formulation is (according to my dealer) ready, but she wasn't sure if it is "in stock" since it has the same part number as the old (amazing to me, since HP seems to change part #'s whenever an engineer looks at something crosseyed). all in all, very good news about the best affordable printer (MHO) on the market. dylan

Sometime > between now and Dec. > David This was confirmed in this week's issue of PC Week, along with a review of the new Deskjet 500 printer that goes with it. (The new ink does work in the old printers, though!) The "first look" review said that besides having none of the smearing problems of the old ink, the new ink allows one to use any good grade of bond paper in the DeskJet instead of being limited to special treated papers.... Good news indeed, but then again as lasers rapidly erode the $1000 price barrier, HP needed to do something to keep the DeskJet a viable product.

Good news indeed, but then again ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ You must be confusig the deskjet with the Paintjet. The deskjet has never required special paper. I've run several reams of plain old copy bond thru mine with great results. On the other hand the paintjet does require HP's special paper or an equivalent. >as lasers rapidly erode the $1000 price barrier, HP needed to do something >to keep the DeskJet a viable product. This is true, but at $729 list, the DJ500 should retail for about $500-$550 one would think. Monty Saine

It is already available in the U.S. It should be showing up at dealer's that carry the DeskJet ink cartridges. The box looks the same except that it has a sticker that indicates the ink is "new." It may take a while for your dealer to use up his current supply and start selling the "new" stuff. Aaron aaronf@hpfcsup.hp.com

(The new ink does work in Yep (not yup) it is for real. I saw an ad for it in the local (San Jose) paper today. The advertised price was $549.00 with the water resistant ink. >having none of the smearing problems of the old ink, the new ink allows >one to use any good grade of bond paper in the DeskJet instead of being >limited to special treated papers.... Good news indeed, but then again Since the first model the DeskJet has used, "any good grade of bond paper", and has never required any special paper. The PaintJet DOES need special paper, but that's a "horse of a different color" (bad pun intended -- sorry though :-) I'm an engineer - not a comic) DISCLAIMER: I don't work for the part of HP that makes the DeskJet. I just use one, and like it. Dave S. ----------

If you are referring to the 'muddiness' of graphic output, this is due (mostly) to the preferences driver for the Deskjet. There are a couple of commercially available replacement drivers which will help considerably, as will using a GOOD quality laser bond paper (I use Boise Cascade, with outstanding results). I suspect that the new ink will yield excellent results with this type of paper. -- Chris (Insert phrase here) Seaman | o\ /o See cseaman@sequent.com <or> | || "Attack of the Killer Smiley"! ...!uunet!sequent!cseaman | \vvvvvv/ Coming Soon | \____/ to a newsgroup near you!

I use regular bond paper intended for use inplain-paper copy machines and laser printers. I regularly compare the print quality of my DeskJet (original) and HPLaserJet (various models). While I will say the comparison is mostly normal text, I have compared a few graphics things also. I find the difference almost nil. DISCLAIMER:I don't work for the part of HP that makes printers of any kind. They nor HP give me anything for promoting them. I just use them quite a bit. I like them quite a bit too. Dave S.
