[comp.sys.amiga] A3000 chip prices revisited

scott@stsci.EDU (Jim Scott) (09/28/90)

Although this is sort of beating a deadhorse:

Several people have noted my 'outrageous' claims about the
A3000's RAM chip prices.

Please refer to Briwall's ads (i.e., Amiga World, 10/90)
or Grapevine Group (ditto) or Memory World (also, ditto.)

1Mx4 chips : $68,$54.95,$56.95
256x4 chips: $13,------,$12.00

I claimed $15. Sorry. I was doing that from memory (no pun
intended at work.) Really, they are about $13.00 per chip.

The fact still remains that the A3000 FAST RAM prices are
$136 and $104 per MEG, as stated by me. Recall that you
MUST add each bank in sets of 8. 8 256x4 give 1MEG, 8 1Mx4
give 4MEG. These are all static column ZIPS.

Therefore, if the A3000 25-100 comes with 5Meg RAM and the
A3000 25-50 comes with 1Meg the 4Meg difference averages
out to about $470. So the education discount difference of
$800 means you're paying $330 for the extra 50MEG of hard
drive. This difference is even more reasonable if the
A3000 25-100 comes with the 1Mx4 chips, as I suspect it
does.

Again, this is reasonable.

Approximations on calculations 'not-with-standing' this
is correct. If it REALLY is cheaper ($75/MEG!), let me
know so I can add another 4MEG of RAM now. I need it!

I thought all 3000s were shipped with 2M DIP RAM.

If the 3000 comes with 5M, and there is 2M of chip RAM, then the
remaining 3M can't be 1Mx4 chips.

The 3000/25-100 is overpriced relative to the 3000/25-50, Amigaworld
advertisers notwithstanding (which, by the way, is one word.)

T suspect you can get ZIPs at substantially cheaper prices than what
you have quoted. Here is an excerpt from an article posted on August
4:

->BTW, to all you other 3000 owners out there looking for static column ZIPs,
->I bought mine at $8/ZIP (for 24) from a place in Santa Clara, California
->called BJS Electronics (their phone number is 408-748-9762 (1400 Coleman
->Rd., if you're local)). Compared to the $6/ZIP I paid for used page mode
->ZIPs from Kreuger, I'd say that this place is a _real_ bargain. I'd
->definitly urge anyone looking for A3000 memory to give them a call.
->
->-Dave Schreiber at davids@cup.portal.com "Coffee, Darling?"
->Possible future humerous quote: "A/UX: Unix done right!"

I took Dave's advice and ordered 16 256Kx4 80ns static column ZIPs for
$7.50 a chip in mid August. That's $60 per meg. Shipping was $3.50 for
regular UPS delivery or $5.00 for 2 day delivery. I don't know what
their current prices are, but I doubt they've gone up too much (if any).
I was very pleased with BJS and recommend them to anyone looking for
A3000 memory.

No, the 25/50 comes with 2 megs of DIPs (1 fast, 1 chip). The 25/100
has 4 megs 1x4 SCRAM zips (fast), and 1 meg DIPs (chip).

Too bad they can't use MAC SIMMs like my Fast RAM can. MacWeek has an
add for 80ns 1x8 SIMMS for $39.00!

2 megs for 78.00!

That's pretty good...I just ordered two megabytes worth of 256K x 4 static
column mode ZIPs for $10.95. They were also 80ns, but were the Mac SIMMs
static column mode?

I may (or may not) have been one of them. Your prices on 256Kx4 SCRAM
ZIPs are outrageous.

Please refer to Briwall's ads (i.e., Amiga World, 10/90)
or Grapevine Group (ditto) or Memory World (also, ditto.)

   1Mx4 chips : $68,$54.95,$56.95
   256x4 chips: $13,------,$12.00

Call long distance information in the 408 area code. Ask for San Jose,
then BJS Electronics. Now, call them and get a price for 256Kx4 SCRAM
ZIPs. I got 32 of them for $6/part.

The fact still remains that the A3000 FAST RAM prices are
$136 and $104 per MEG, as stated by me.

With your pricing, that's correct. With more reasonable pricing, the
256Kx4 chips are $48/meg. I'd be surprised if CBM wasn't getting
better prices than that.

Therefore, if the A3000 25-100 comes with 5Meg RAM and the
   A3000 25-50 comes with 1Meg the 4Meg difference averages
   out to about $470.

If it only comes with 1Meg of chip & 1Mx4 parts, you're right. If it
comes with 2meg of chip & 3Meg of 256Kx4 parts, the extra memory is
probably less than $150.

So the education discount difference of
$800 means you're paying $330 for the extra 50MEG of hard
   drive.

With more reasonable ram prices, that's $650 for 50Meg of high-quality
hard disk. That's steep, but not outrageous.

   Approximations on calculations 'not-with-standing' this
is correct. If it REALLY is cheaper ($75/MEG!), let me
know so I can add another 4MEG of RAM now. I need it!

Well, it's much cheaper - but only if you buy the 256Kx4 chips, and
not the 1Meg/4 chips. The best price I found on those was just shy of
$100/meg.

I'm not sure if this went through before, but can you post the number of
the store that sells the simms?

Thanks,
