Down-loading AMIGA software from ftp-sites ------------------------------------------ Thank you to all the helpful people who gave me information about using "lharc" and "zoo". I am using a VAX system at the South Australian Institute of Technology to access various ftp-sites around the world. I use a Macintosh, with KERMIT, as my communications terminal, because this combination allows me a quite high bit-rate for data transmission ( around 9000 bits per second ), whereas my AMIGA is limited by my modem ( a snail's pace 300 bps ). I have no trouble logging onto various ftp-sites, although there are some sites such as "abcfd20.larc.nasa.gov" which I cannot reach, for some reason unknown to me. I can navigate around these software archives using the "cd" and "ls" commands, and use "ASCII" and "BINARY" and "get" commands to download software. The resulting files are then down-loaded onto the hard disc of the Mac terminal, using KERMIT. I remember to change the "file default" menu to "binary" option when I try to down-load binary files. I have no problems with ASCII files. But to date I have had no success with binary files. The final step is to convert my Macintosh files into AMIGA format files, using MAC-2-DOS on my AMIGA 500. ( I have a Mac floppy drive connected to my AMIGA ). Can anyone see what I am doing wrong ? Whenever I access the ftp-sites, I always get a message "8-bit connection assumed". How can you load software for a 16-bit computer, when you only have an 8-bit connection ?
