<<<void>>> For any of you interested in the downing of Korean Airlines flight 007 earlier this fall, there is a very interesting and informative article in this month's (December) IEEE Spectrum magazine, on Page 22. Due to the length of the article, and copyright restrictions, I will only quote from the introductory paragraph: ``... according to many U.S. experts on both the technology and procedures of intelligence gathering, the Soviets may have known a great deal less and U.S. military forces a great deal more about the situation as it unfolded than was originally supposed.'' The IEEE is the ``Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.''. "Spectrum" is the `flagship' publication and often carries articles of public interest, usually with technical details included. In my opinion, this is a generally conservative or middle-of-the-road publication, and I don't think they have an axe to grind with respect to the KAL tragedy. I strongly suggest reading this article if the downing affected you. -- Larry West UC San Diego possible net addresses: -- ARPA: west@NPRDC -- UUCP: ucbvax!sdcsvax!sdcsla!west -- or ucbvax:sdcsvax:sdcsla:west
