[comp.sys.amiga] Further info on the Xetec CD-ROM

a186@mindlink.UUCP (Harvey Taylor) (10/16/90)

Since I wrote a short note re calling the Xetec BBS ((913)827-1974)
a couple of weeks ago, I have received several me-too requests for
further info on the CD-ROM systems. I was on again last night & picked
 up this info.
What follows is a severly edited capture of some interesting info.

---begin .xpost---

At this time, the shipping date is set for three weeks from now
[Sept.10]. The drive will work with any FastTrak SCSI controller and
most other SCSI hard drive controllers. The power supply on the
external unit will be self-contained. Current pricing is as follows:

CDx-650e (external) - $699.00
CDx-650i (internal) - $599.00

We are also offering our FastTrak line of SCSI controllers at a special
price for those of you who do not currently have a controller, as you
need one to use the CD-ROM drive. We are offering these prices for the
controller if PACKAGED WITH the CDx-650 drive. These controllers can be
used to add a hard drive to the system later.

For the Amiga 500 or 1000 - SA-5 OR SA-10 $100.00
For the Amiga 2000 or 2500 - MiniFastCard $ 50.00
                                FastCard Plus $120.00

We are presently testing the CDx-650 with other controllers. It
will work on a 2000 or 2500 with any controller if the Mini FastCard is
added to the system. The internal unit for the 2000 and 2500 requires
the 5 1/4 drive bay.
Anything made for the CDTV should work on the CDx-650. They both
use the ISO 9660/High Sierra standard for CD-ROM's.
The drive is also capable of playing standard audio CD's with included
 software.
We have tested it with Commodores 2090 and 2090a, neither of which
work because they do not support the Commodore hard blocks standard.
Don't know about the 2091a yet, but have heard that it does use the hard
blocks standard, so it should at least come close to working.
The drive should be available for shipment within three weeks[Sept.17].

You will notice that the shipping date is stated to be three weeks from
Sept. 10 and Sept.17...So, a couple of questions:

    Does anybody have one yet?
Anybody have any comments on the FastTrak controller?
Anybody have any comments on Xetec, the company?

    PS.
I have no special relationship to Xetec.
If you want more info, call them.
