[net.general] Survey Results: Religion as the Opiate of the Net

wbpesch@ihuxp.UUCP (Walt Pesch) (12/09/83)

Responses to my request for responses to the survey "Is Religion the
Opiate of the Net" were good, with 128 responses. First, some
comments though: Many people were glad to see this survey, for they
thought that it is an interesting subject and atleast I have wondered
about the religious beliefs in a technical background. As to the
educational background of the net, from other surveys the figures are
that almost all readers have a college degree, with two-thirds having
masters and another third having a PhD. And as to why I posted this
to net.general and the reply to net.followup is that as I stated when
I started this survey, that I wanted a statistically valid population
for this survey, and I don't think I would get that from net.religion.
Net.general is generally read, and therefor a general subsection of the
population of the net. To the results!!!

1. Where you raised in a religious environment? (By the way, I don't
have a copy of the original article and will paraphrase the questions.
Sorry. If anyone has a copy, could you post the originals?)

NO 33 26%
UNSURE 17 13%

2. Do you currently believe in a pantheon of Gods or Supreme Beings?

YES 55 43%
NO 45 35%
UNSURE 28 22%

The remaining question where answered only if question number two was
not answered by a "NO"

3. Do you attend religious services?

YES 38 46%
NO 45 54%
UNSURE 0 0%

4. Do you believe that God, Gods, or any Supreme Beings have a
meddling influence on the earth?

YES 36 43%
NO 36 43%
UNSURE 11 14%

5. Do you believe that God, Gods, or any Supreme Beings have a
day-to-day influence on you?

YES 35 42%
NO 38 46%
UNSURE 10 12%

Thank you everyone for participating, and I hope that this is
informative for everyone. And that lively discussion can come out of
these facts and of these facts.

Should perhaps "net.religion?" be created to discuss this. Also, I don't
think that net.religion is the correct place to discuss this subject for
many people do not subscribe to this group and this is an issue that
will interest many people. Atleast this is my opinion.
