[comp.sys.amiga] Rebuttal

JKT100@psuvm.psu.edu (JKT) (10/17/90)

As I type this the World Series is airing with an Apple media blitz
for their new line of Macs. I propose the following rebuttal
(Commodore, are you reading this?):

"Apple says they have a new line of low priced computers. However,
their 'low prices' are only in comparison to the normal high Macintosh
prices. And to get the price of their Mac Classic that 'low' they give
you a computer with no color and only one disk drive.
If you want a powerful home computer that won't break your budget,
allow us to introduce you to the computer for the creative mind...
The Amiga, by Commodore."

Obviously this needs to be cleaned up, but I think you get the idea.
Apple is making their name known again, and this time to the home
user, not the business user. They're hitting Commodore where I think
it will hurt most, and Commodore has to strike back and defend the
sales they stand to lose this Christmas.

Apple also ran an ad in either InfoWorld or PCWeek claiming the Mac can
run more software than any other computer in the world. Commodore should
jump on this one... Ami can run PC, Mac, ST, 64, and UNIX... in addition, of
course, to regular Amiga software.
Another idea that would help to sell Amigas is to make a '500PC' package
for the mass-market outlets which includes a 500 with the Pulsar PC board.
This would be a great help in competing with the PS/1, since a 500PC with
color monitor & additional floppy would cost only a little more than a B/W
PS/1. Commercials could be run comparing the 500 & 500PC to the PS/1 and
Mac Classic.
Well, anyway, I think we all agree that Commodore needs to do some major
advertising, and do it NOW!! Releasing CDTV wouldn't be unwelcome, either..

I've long wanted to see Commodore "reply" ads countering Mac ads. ESPECIALLY
that stupid Mac "multimedia" HeloCar commercial. It could have (and SHOULD
have) been pointed out that the Amiga could have produced a FAR better-
looking animation, an equally good-looking booklet, and for about half the
price. WHY doesn't CBM buy time on the Sunday morning news programs? Let's
go against IBM and their overpriced and OS/2 hamstrung PS/2!
