[comp.sys.amiga] printers

riddle@drivax.UUCP (Riddle) (12/01/87)

Well it's finally time to spend my money on a printer (singlar, wife won't
let me have 3 special purpose printers). So, which one is the best at both
color and letter quality printing from both A1000 and B2000.

Acually, E-mail me about the printers/software you use or have tried and gave
up. Tell me features/problems that you've seen. How do you use your printer?
(hourly,desktop pub.,paintings,listings,labels,TTY,takeup space on desk,????)

I've seen these questions asked twice before (a long time ago), but I don't
know the answer. All the magizines articles I can find are over a year old.
The special edition magizines about printers only know about those computers
that can't do color, so color quality is never mentioned.

InkJets give good colors, but I won't send my Resume out on clay paper.
Color Laser printers are out of my money bracket.
Do color ribbons on dot-matrix limit color blends?

Please reply E-mail, I'll post a summary.

Can anyone tell me if there is a Star Sg10 specific driver around for
1.3? None of the stock Epson drivers are completely compatible. I know
this has been covered here before but I never saw a response. Please
respond via mail if possible.

Also, a friend is trying to use an Epson LQ1050 with Wordperfect and
having difficulty getting the stock drivers to work for all the fonts and
modes. Short of starting from scratch with Printdef are there any suggestions.
Is the 1050 supposed to be completely compatible with the earlier LQs?

Thanks,

Greetings,
I would like to know what the best printer is for the amiga a3000. It must
be letter quality and able to print graphics. Black and white is fine but it
should be 300 dpi and preferrably around $500 retail (no laserprinters).

I expect to get my first amiga any day now and I know very little about
printer compatibilities. I know the HP deskjet series can be
used with the amiga and it seems like the right choice, but I must also be
able to print with AMAXII running. Is there a driver for the deskjet that
allows it to be used with AMAXII? I understand the HP deskwriter will
work with the mac but I don't know if it will work with the amiga.
What are my options? All replies are gratefully welcome. Please email, I'll
summarized if requested.

Thanks,
	Tom

The only competition, IMHO, for the KX-P1124 is the NEC P6, no longer
a current model, or the NEC P2200 or P5200. Those have the cleanest
graphics printout I've ever seen from a dot matrix printer, and their
prices are in the $350 to $450 range. Take a look; to my eye the
print quality difference easily justifies the price difference.

I have the P2200, though it's been upgraded since. It's OK,
ribbons are a *pain* to find, and quite expensive. I'd take a
good long look at the Citizen GSX-140... beautiful type, color
option, LCD status display, Epson and other emulations, 24-pin,
solidly built... all the perks, a good deal all around.

I like the Panasonic KX-1124 too. Good printer.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU MAY WANT TO CHECK OUT AN EPSON LQ-510. I'VE HAD AN LQ-500
(WHICH I BELIEVE IS THE PREDECESSOR TO THE LQ-510) FOR 2 YEARS NOW AND LOVE IT.
I THINK THE PRICE WILL BE IN YOUR BALLPARK; NOT LIST, BUT IF YOU LOOK AROUND FOR
A GOOD DISCOUNT. HOPE THIS HELPS !

REGARDS

I got my lq-510 in July - Its great. Cost $271. Right after I got mine,
they started offering the extra font cartridge and a 2 year warrenty
for free. I went back and asked if they would honor it for my purchase.
I was shocked when the manager approved it. The place - Soft Warehouse.
I don't know if the offer is still valid but its worth a look at.
BTW - the Epson LQ-510 price is $271 normally, the Panasonic 1124 is
normally $280. These were, in July, the best prices in the Philadelphia
area that I could find, and were as good if not better than mail order.

Hope this helps.

Mark Cole

STD Disclaimer: Just a VERY satisfied customer of Soft Warehouse.

You might also check out the new Fujitsu DL1100. We were impressed with its
quality and the price is about the same as the Epson LQ-510. Since it is
brand new, I can't comment about longevity. However, it looks good and may
be worth considering especially if you need a small footprint. Just ignore
the fact that it looks like a toaster.

I've had *very* good luck with my Panasonic KX-P1124
printer...its a 24-pin narrow carriage printer that has
epson LQ-2500 (i think) and IBM Proprinter emulation...
(I think its the LQ-2500, but it *definitely* emulates
an Epson LQ series printer - don't have my manual with me)

I've never had any problems with it and it produces very good
quality print...you can get it mail order for between $275 and
$300...I think it has about the best bang for the buck available..
