[comp.sys.amiga] A590 drive parameter question

emwessel@praxis.cs.ruu.nl (Eric van Wessel) (10/18/90)

Question :

I just installed a new SCSI harddisk in my A590.
The installation software tells me this :

- Manufactures name : Quantum
- Drive name : P40S 940-40-94xx
- Drive revision : A.2

- cylinders : 1171
- heads             : 1		<=== ????????
- blocks per track : 70

Everything works perfect, but I wonder if the numbers are correct.

Thanks.

The numbers (for your hard drive installation software) look weird, but they
work, because SCSI is VERY lenient about parameters, as along as the totals
work out. You could tell it that it had 1 cylinder and 1171 heads and it would
still accept it! For the record, your Quantum 40 has THREE heads, THREE
surfaces. I have one too, in a Tiny-Tiger from M.A.S.T. Anyone else have
one of these beasts? When I got my TT, INFO in CLI told me I had *50* meg.
I called M.A.S.T. and they told me that they had made an error in the
devs:mountlist, and said that the drive had 4 surfaces/heads. A clear
error, but SCSI blithely told me I had a phantom 10 megs. Too bad; I
thought I'd gotten a hell of a deal...
