[comp.sys.amiga] Just Plane Delusions?

Well, the source is the rumor column of InfoWorld, so take it with a VERY
large grain of salt.

"Stretching the bounds of any reality, I've (Robert Cringely) heard that
Commodore and Sun will in November announce that Commodore will take over
Sun's Intel and Motorola workstation lines. I'm still not sure I believe
this, but the idea is that Sun doesn't want the support burden, while
Commodore is desparate to get into the Unix market."

[Oh? I thought that's why they're doing SVR4 on the Amiga]

Anyways, happy rumor-mongering.

This may not be quite as strange as it sounds (strange, yes, but not that
strange).

     * Sun has stopped supporting their 386 line. That is, the latest
release of the the SunOS, 4.1 will not be available for the 386i.

     * The Sun Motorola line accounts for only about 15% of their
current sales, and is shrinking.

     * On November 5, Sun will announce some "new products", presumably
the follow on to the Sparcstation 1+ (Sparc 2?).

     * The 386 group is already stationed in the East Coast, New York I
think.

So November 5 might be a good time for them to announce their exit from
the Moto. market. While their 680x0 and Intel machines are still viable, there
is really no point for them to continue spending resources on 3 different
archetectures.

Now, why would Commodore want to pick up those lines? Beats the hell out of
me.

Where would they get the money for it? Dunno. But we should find out in a couple
of weeks.

If they do do something like that I can only hope that it doesn't pull tech
support away from the Amiga line.

Any opinions are my own since nobody else would ever want them.
