[comp.sys.amiga] Best low cost term prog

gilgalad@caen.engin.umich.edu (Ralph Seguin) (10/11/90)

Hi. I have several questions:

1. What is the best low cost (PD, shareware) term program for the
Amiga? My absolute need is completely bulletproof VT100, VT220
    and possibly Tek emulation.

2. Where can I get the latest version of GNU emacs? Is this a full
    port of GNU emacs?

3. Has anybody been working on a port of some Common LISP to the Amiga?

4. Has anybody done a port of GNU Smalltalk to the Amiga?

5. has anybody been working on GNU G++ (since GCC is now available)?

			Thanks, Ralph

So far, to me, the only die hard killer vt100,220 emulaton software
has to be (drum roll please.....) Handshake! Available
at you local K-Mart abcfd20.larc.nasa.gov. It's wonderful,
but, 1) No zmodem (boo) 2) No 220 neeto-colors like
VersaTerm on the Mac (boooooo) but, its great anyway.

Ok. Last time. This thread is officially dead. (wow! onomonopea!)
Scheme, AmigaScheme, and XLISP is it.
AmigaScheme (based on A&S purple book) can be found in Compuserve's
AmigaTech forum and in Artificial Inteligence's Scheme. So. Get it.
Maybe I'll upload it to dewey.udel.edu an AMIGA FTP cite, which
I want to get going. It *IS* at my school and all, so why not!
Ok... that's where it's going. dewey.udel.edu

I would answer the other questions , but.. I'll let
the gnumanicas handle them

Well, Baud Bandit is pretty fast (slick) if your primarary use of this terminal
for BBSing. (I guess not). For commercial market, ATalkIII support good vt100
and Tek emulation (It also have some nice features like *talking* , XZmodem,
Kermit, etc.).
The newest release of the Jr. Comm version 1.01 is also very
nice. It has improved it's vt100 to do backward scrolling, Large size letters,
etc. It also support other emulations; among them, IBM color/mono, skypics,
Amiga, vt102, etc. However, it doesn't do Tek. emulation.
VLT (PD/share) is
very nice too. I haven't had too much experience with this one, but I heard
that it has very good vt100 emulation, nice Tek emulator (you can magify and
stuff). Maybe someone else can fill in on this one.
You could find a copy of the Jr.Comm 1.01 in your local BBS (I'm sure), and
also find a copy of the latest VLT and VLT Jr. in abcfd20.larc.nasa.gov FTP
site.

Glad to offer you my advice.

VLT is perhaps the most thorough and complete vt100 emulation
communication program I have ever used on any computer. Most term programs
have small flaws with the more intricate control sequences, but VLT does
not exhibit any of those problems. In addition, VLT is fast. There are no
problems with I/O contention or sluggish response. VLT also supports a
very thorough script language that interfaces with rexx, allowing complete
control of the comm program itself.

Transfer protocols are external, thereby giving you access to Kermit,
Xmodem, Zmodem and any other protocol that is external. In addition
VLT has a rexx port, allowing external control from Arexx.

VLT also fully supports Tek 4010/4014 emulation and does a very good
job with it. It sometimes has problems handling vector drawing at high
baud rates (>9600), but other than that it supports IFF saving of TEK,
archiving, complete color control, zooming, and extended TEK codes.

I cannot over recommend VLT / it is the best VT100 PD comm package
available for the Amiga, hands down.

I am currently using VLT, the vt100 emulation is adequate for the basic
unix screen editors and such, the Tek is very good, the only one I know
with sufficient magnification to see detailed drawings.

I use a hacked up version of vt100 (2.9b). I hacked it to get a nice border
around it so it will look nice on my 2.0 overscan workbench. Now if only I
could track down the bug that hangs my file system every now and them :-)
