[comp.sys.amiga] C-Ltd HD won't validate, Help! Please?

elw@netex.netx.com (Edwin Wiles) (10/22/90)

Someone must have it in for me! First my printer goes bad, then I catch
a terrible cold, I finally think I've got it all straightend out again,
and the power company glitches my hard drive....<sob!>... 1/2 :-)

Here's the setup:

	Amiga 500, 1.2 Chips, 1.3 Workbench,
	C-Ltd SCSIdos 2.6,
	C-Ltd SCSI A500 SCSI Interface,
	C-Ltd AM-50 Hard Drive.

Here's how I got nailed:

Working along and got hit twice by power outages.
Once with a clean system, and once again while attempting
to clean the system up. (No, it wasn't storming, I'm
smarter than that! I believe the power co. was working
on the lines, without letting us know! Ghirrrr!)

Here's the problem:

As the system boots, it quite properly enters the C-Ltd
hard drive validation state. When it's about finished,
a system requester appears saying, roughly:

		Key 7195 already set.

If you select, "retry", the same requester comes up.
If you select, "cancel", a new requester comes up.

"Disk structure corrupt, use DISKDOCTOR to fix it."

If I answer the requesters quickly enough upon bootup,
the validation sequence occurs again, and I get the same
requesters. I've tried C-Ltd's procedures for getting
their auto-validation to work, but get the same results.

The wierd thing is that I can read files off of the disk
without any trouble at all. But any sort of operation
which would change the contents of the disk, such as
deleting files, or writting new information, cause the
"not validated" system requester to pop up.

I've *never* before run into a situation where my HD
	wouldn't validate. I'm stuck!

My questions:

	- Is there a way to get the drive to validate, that has a high
probability of leaving the files on the drive undamaged?

	- Is it *safe* to turn DISKDOCTOR loose on the HD? Are there
any 'gotchas' I have to worry about? (Like maybe it attaches
ALL the files to the root directory????)

	- Am I going to have to reformat the drive? <aggghhhh!>

	- I do have C-Ltd SCSIdos 3.0 available, but have never installed
it as I was quite happy enough with 2.6. Does 3.0 have a better
	validation sequence?

I would prefer it if you would MAIL your responses to me, but if you
must post, I've redirected all followups to "comp.sys.amiga.tech", as
this is effectively a technical question.

Also, I know that C-Ltd went belly up some time ago, have they re-formed?
Is there anyone providing support for C-Ltd hard disk owners? If there
is, could someone provide me with the appropriate phone number(s), and/or
address(es)?

Many thanks for any help you can provide!
