Just got the October 22, 1990 Newsweek. On p. 53: Apple's Third Revolution: Can new low-cost machines reverse its slide? Quotes: "...traditionally pricy Apple..." --Newsweek (John Schwartz) "It's a revolution of a different sort, a marketing revolution." --Jim Weil (market analyst) "...a more agressive Apple." --Michael Spindler (Apple COO) "For the last few years Apple preferred evolution to revolution... As Apple stalled, competitors were catching up... Software giant Microsoft...Windows 3 ... At NeXT...Jobs...is creating what many thought the next Mac ought to be: a user-friendly machine designed to run the increasingly popular UNIX operating system. Companies like Sun have also made UNIX easier to use. Meanwhile, upgrades for Apple's own software [read OS] have been delayed repeatedly. Worse, Apple has alienated software developers." --Newsweek "Apple's price-slashing strategy was born of necessity." --Newsweek "Apple's window [of opportunity], so to speak, is closing fast." --Newsweek A fairly balanced analysis which says they may succeed and they may not. No mention of Amiga (or, of course, the ST) as a competitor. = Richard J. In-Reply-To: message from akerman@qucis.queensu.CA Something you might want to add is the fact that Apple stock took a dive the day after Sculley announced the new machines. I think the market is getting tired of paying Apple prices for repackaged technology. Also, the Newsweek article said that the Mac Classic was lowered to $999 from $1600 after complaints from Mac developers...![A --Rick Wrigley fhwri@conncoll.bitnet

I have noticed Commmodore stock dropping on several occasions after a product announcement. And not just for the PLUS/4; as I recall, the stock dropped immediately after the C128 and the A3000 introductions, and I wouldn't be surprised if this was pretty standard. Maybe some who really understands the stock market knows why (of course, if you really understand the stock market, you're probably too rich to hang out here...). >Sean -- Dave Haynie Commodore-Amiga (Amiga 3000) "The Crew That Never Rests" {uunet|pyramid|rutgers}!cbmvax!daveh PLINK: hazy BIX: hazy Standing on the shoulders of giants leaves me cold -REM
