[comp.sys.amiga] HDBackup on Extras2.0 B2 disk

crash@ckctpa.UUCP (Frank J. Edwards) (10/24/90)

Has anyone else noticed that there's a program called HDBackup on the
Extras disk that came with the 2.02 Beta2 release? I've tried using
it but I want to do my backup on my Viper, so I went into the HDBackup.help
file and changed DEVS to include my tape drive (using "tape:" which should
be recognized, at least by BRU) and I changed USE to "tape:" also.

Alas, things were not meant to be done so easily. It appears that HDBackup
doesn't actually read that file for it's config information! I still get
only DF0:, DF1:, DF2:, and DF3: on the Device menu. And even if I left it
at DF0: it would say, "Creating Backup" but nothing was being done. I switched
to another screen ("Isn't multitasking great!") and tried STATUS to see if
it had started up BRU. Nope. Thinking that maybe it wasn't a CLI process,
I also tried Xoper but with the same result.

Other than that, ie. it doesn't work (!), its a nice interface. There
should be someway to specify a file pattern BEFORE searching the partition
for files to backup, and it'd be nice to be able to specify a directory
instead of a device (so I wouldn't have to wait 30 seconds while it
scans my 157MB drive :-).

For a package that I'll be using all the time, those are pretty minor
quirks when I can just backup everything in one fell swoop on a single tape.
