Hi, Folks!
I have a question about modems, maybe someone can help me.
There are modems with a transfer protocol MNP 5. These
modems cost about 100 DM (about U.S.-$ 60) more than
normal modems. I know, that these modems are able to compress
a data stream up to a transfer rate of 200 %. My question is:
Have these modems special hardware to analyze the data and
compress it or is this task implemented by software?
(Is it possible to change the EPROM of a 'standard' modem to
a MNP-5 EPROM?)
Is there any information about MNP-5 available? (Books, Data
sheets or something similar)
Another question (The reason, why I post this to c.s.a):
Is it possible, to implement this protocol via a serial driver
inside the Amiga? I think, an A3000 will be fast enough, to do
this real time compression/expansion. You would be able to use
your standard modem as a MNP-5 FAST modem without paying more
money! If someone provides me with sufficient information, I
will try to write such a device.
Please EMail me!
