[comp.sys.amiga] 688 Attack Sub: Why not modem support?

fhwri%CONNCOLL.BITNET@cunyvm.cuny.edu (10/23/90)

At the store where I (sometimes) work, we had the same question about no
modem play on 688 Attack Sub. So we called EA. They gave us a song & dance
about how modem play was impossible on the Amiga (and they sell POPULOUS!)
and we concluded that the programmers who ported it were an ignorant bunch
of f*rts. Not that it was as poorly ported as STARFLIGHT was--Micro Magic,
who did the STARFLIGHT port (and also does Amiga ports for Origin--remember
ULTIMA III, which didn't reset the turn # when all your guys died?), don't
know (apparently) how to program on the Amiga; their games, which do work,
don't multitask and use the Workbench screen to hide bitplanes they're
not using. I told EA to find these guys another line of work--like Mac
ports...

As I said in an earlier post, EA (which originally made a big deal about
supporting the Amiga--and they did give us the IFF standard) has been
giving us the short shrift lately. STARFLIGHT was a disaster--still a great
game, but a TERRIBLE port (Micro Magic should be sweeping floors or doing
Mac ports or something--NEVER should they be doing Amiga ports EVER AGAIN!).
The only good stuff from EA lately has been all imported from Blighty
(IMPERIUM (the only problem with this one is that I (blush) can't figure
out what the %$%^$ to do after the first turn...), POPULOUS (and the upcoming
POWER MONGER (can't wait!), etc.)...they haven't put out anything of their
own lately that's been nearly as good as, say ARCTICFOX, which is 4 years
old...
Although I had dropped my estimation of MicroProse after the
miserable port of GUNSHIP and the straight C64-port of KENNEDY APPROACH,
after PIRATES!, all is forgiven, as long as they keep enhancing their
ports. I'm QUITE eager to see what RAILROAD TYCOON looks like on a REAL
computer...
