[comp.sys.amiga] Best TERM

gilgalad@caen.engin.umich.edu (Ralph Seguin) (10/25/90)

Hi. Well, I've tried Handshake, JR-COmm and VLT. Handshake provides
the best VT100, althouhg it is still not perfect. I like the
features of VLT and JR-Comm. Sadly, none of them have bullet-proof
VT100. What is the BEST term (commercial or PD) for the Amiga?
I know that this is a religious issue 8-)

			Thanks, Ralph

I've been very happy with A-Talk Plus, although OXXI would probably
rather I move up to A-Talk III. Make me an offer, OXXI?

Anyway, although it's missing AREXX and a couple of new protocols
that I wouldn't use (I use kermit to all my UNIX and OS-9/68000 hosts),
I like the A-Talk interface, it's quite fast, does an excellent VT100
and Tektronix 4014 emulation, and came with termcap and terminfo files.
What I would like is a 38,400 baud rate, though, and maybe a VT240
emulation.

Given that, I'd recommend A-Talk III to a new buyer.

A-Talk Plus is a 2 & 1/2 years old program, completely superseded by
A-Talk III. A-Talk Plus was published by Felsina Software. A-Talk III is
published by Oxxi. Inc. They've had a very cheap upgrade path from AT+ tp
AT-/// since day one. Call Oxxi at (213)427-1227 for the details.

A-Talk III was the first commercial comm program to add Arexx support way
back in late 1988. It now supports every possible protocol, either internally
(X, Y, Y-batch, Y-g, WX, Z modem, kermit) and external XPR protocols (X/Z
modem, Kermit, CIS Bplus).

A-Talk III can send up at speeds up to 57.6K. receive at speeds up to 38K,
with hardware handshake.

Thanks.

A good term program, that seems relatively unknown is Meshugena.
Here's a small summary of its good and bad features.

Good points:

vt220 emulation (the best I've seen)
80/132 column support
supports double wide/double size characters, and blinking
multiple sessions/windows with uw (similar to dnet)
scrollback buffer
Windows can be iconified.
keyboard is setup right.
it's shareware (I believe)

Bad points:

no file xfer.
no printer support (who cares?)
no script language
bell is only video.
cant save scrollback buffer

Meshugena is definately worth looking into if you are interested in
good emulation.
