[comp.sys.amiga] Touch Screens ... any advice?

a774@mindlink.UUCP (Wayde Police) (11/02/90)

I may need to interface Amiga 500s (and a few 2000s) with touch screens. I
have heard that there are some available, but I don't know any brands, prices,
or hardware requirements. Could anyone with experience with touch screens let
me know how they interface with the amiga, software considerations,
resolutions, problems, etc? Do these screens replace the mouse, or work as a
unique device? Thanks to all who can help ...

I know of and have used three different touchscreens with the Amiga. All three
plug into the serial port and emulate the mouse. You can still use the mouse
as an input device if you want.

The three touchscreens available are from:
	Elographics
	105 Randolph Road
	Oak Ridge, TN 37830
	(615) 482-4100

	Amigo Business Computers, Inc.
	192 Laurel Road
	East Northport, NY 11731
	(516) 757-7334

	MicroTouch Systems, Inc.
	55 Jonspin Road
	Wilmington, MA 01887
	(508) 694-9900

The driver for the Elographics touchscreen is shipped with AmigaVision. The
Amigo touchscreen is also available in a parallel port version. All three
install in front of the screen and behind the bezel and require a hole cut in
the back of the monitor case for the interface cable.

I'm not sure of the prices for any of the touchscreens. The main thing to watch
when using one is the size of the area to be touched. People with thick fingers
can't be as percise when touching on a point. The only incompatability I can
remember was between a beta version of the MicroTouch driver and the driver for
the Easyl drawing tablet, other than that I've had no problems. If you load the
driver in the startup-sequence you never need the mouse or keyboard.

Hope this helps.
