[comp.sys.amiga] Amiga Unix Hardware Requirements

tjhayko@THUNDER.LAKEHEADU.CA (10/30/90)

What are the hardware requirements of Amiga Unix? I have an
A2000 and I am wondering what I will need to run Unix on it.

As I understand it the 68030 is a _must_ and, possibly the full 32-bit
architecture of the A3000 as well. I'd love to be able to run Unix on
my 2000, but I don't think that even adding the '030 CPU is all that's
necessary. If anyone else knows more please feed us knowledge!

I saw the A3000UX demo that C= gave here, and they said that to run Unix
you would need at least a 68020.

This implies that you should be able to run Unix on a 2000 with a 2620
or 2630 card in it.

Whether this will be officially supported (which I doubt) is another
matter entirely.

How about a B2000 with A2620? The promises from Commodore that Un*x would
be released for it?

The startup-menu for the A2620 where You can choose Amiga-Dos on 68000 or
on 68020, or Un*x?

The MMU on the A2620, which only function in an AmigaDos system is to
slow things down? (It requires on more wait-state)

The reason I bought my 68020 card from Commodore and not third-party was
that Commodore people (also on UseNet) told me that third-party 68020
cards would not be Un*x-compatible.

If Commodore has decided not to fulfill their own promises, they ought
at least to have a world-wide (even including Sweden!) upgrade path,
where your A2620 + <an not to excessive amount of $$> gives you an
A2630 (or A2640!).

Better then that, can I go buy unix right now? Is it out or is it
just in the testing stage? How much is it?

Theres all this talk about running Unix on an Amiga, but where can I get
a copy.
Do I have to pay for it or is it free ? Just about all the software
I've gotten
is either free or shareware, where the shareware fee is very minimal.
Also has
anyone ported X to the amiga yet ?

While this may be true, I was always under the impression that
what was necessary was an MMU, and to get an MMU, you need (or generally
need, not sure) a 68020+. I don't know whether you can get an MMU to work
with a 68000/10 or not. Sorry.

It will be a commercial product from Commodore. They are delivering it
to special customers now. No release date is available. It is
full ATT SV.4.

There is also a version of Minix for the Amiga. It is available
from Prentice Hall (Addison-Wesley? Hmmm. I forget) Minix
is Unix v. 7 compatible.

An excellent, full featured X for both Amiga Dos and Amiga Unix
are available....
