[comp.sys.amiga] Trumpcard/Syquest/Rev4.2 A2000 HELP!!!

ammrk@swpyr2.sbc.com (Mike R. Kraml) (11/12/90)

I have a friend with an A2000 Rev 4.2 motherboard whom just bought
a new Trumpcard Pro and a Syquest 40 meg drive. We are able to
get the thing up and formatted, but then returns ramdom read/write
errors. It really appears to be a timing problem. It sometimes
works fine, but often returns R/W errors. I do remember seeing
some messages 6-8 months ago or so on some motherboard fixes to the
Rev 4.2 motherboard 2000s. If anyone has any of these, I would
really appreciate an E-Mail message with the info. He is really
bumming, he uses his Amiga professionally, and needs the removable
storage capability. Please let me know ASAP. Thanks all, Mike...

Try and se if he can dump the SyQuest, and have him go buy the GVP/Ricoh
50 meg removable TRUE hard drive combo. Actually, the Ricoh drive is just
a removable platter. The actual drive mechanisms are inside the drive
itself.

There is no need to dump the SyQuest drive. Both the Ricoh and SyQuest
are TRUE removable media hard drives. They both are removable media
platters and in both the actual drive mechanism are inside the drive.

Now I used to have a problem with my SyQuest drive. It would occasionally
lock up during a disk write operation. This problem occurs when the
SyQuest drive is used with a Commodore A2091 controller. It is a problem
in the SyQuest ROMS. I have recieved new ROMS from SyQuest that correct
this problem. I have also noticed that the newer ROMS from SyQuest speed
up the disk access time quite dramatically. So, for those SyQuest drive
owners out there I would call SyQuest and ask then for a ROM update.

Here is a summary of the ROM versions that I have used:

        ROM SPEED works w/
      version A2091
      ========================
F2G SLOW LOCKUP <-- SyQuest as shipped
        FFH FAST LOCKUP
FAJ FAST YES <-- Amiga owners w/ A2091 need these ROMS

	Well, I have a Syquest and a 4.2 2000, I originally bought the
Trumpcard to use with it but got continuous read write errors and
lockups. The software had a very difficult time recognizing the drive
and the Tech at IVS said to get a replacement card, he figured the one
I had was defective. Upon replacement the card still produced problems
so I tried an ICD SCSI board and have had NO problems to date. Not ONE
error has occurred. I have nothing against IVS but their Trumpcard
was way too frustrating. Sigh..
