Looks like I'm going to purchase a A590 for my A500. Questions: 1. How good is the A590? 2. Is the A590 fast (well for the money)? 3. Can I purchase one, using Student Discount Price $518.00? (i'm a student) Please reply! Paul. "Yep, If you want a mule get an IBM, else if you want a Power Horse get an Amiga."

How good is the A590? How good is good :-) The A590 makes floppies look pedestrian, which is fast enough for me! It's a cinch to install, looks good next to Ami. The extra memory is not what I'd call *easy* to fit, but I've done worse. And, if it isn't big or fast enough, you can daisy-chain thro' the built-in SCSI. > 2. Is the A590 fast (well for the money)? See point above. It's only 80ms access (cf Xetec 80Meg at 11ns) but it *is* DMA, so the data goes where it's needed. > 3. $409!!! Keep in mind that some of us poor souls paid $1000 CDN (or about $840 US) for our A590s and you run the risk of giving us emotional breakdowns every time you mention these insidiously reasonable prices. -- David Plummer - via FidoNet node 1:140/22 UUCP: ...!alberta!dvinci!weyr!70!David.Plummer Domain: David.Plummer@f70.n140.z1.FIDONET.ORG Standard Disclaimers Apply...

Please acknowledge if you receive this message! I don't know if EMAIL works through FIDONET... Well, you definately CAN use an A590 with an A1000, the only difference is that it sits backwards (but it has a nice backside :-) ) and you'd have to lift it up an inch or two. I know a few guys in town who use one that way, and one of the Commodore people on the NET said was (Damn, sorry about the centring... I though C was continue!) unnoficially OK to do so. Mine is about a year old or a little less, and I paid $1000 for it new. Since then, I have made a few changes: a) Threw away the ugly WD93028-SLOW drive drive, and replaced it with a 28ms Seagate ST-157N-1, for 48M. b) Added two megs of RAM. It will also autoboot if you have Kickstart 1.3 So, since the drive was $500, I'd like to get $1000 for it without the RAM, firm. I think that's fair given the new drive and the RAM. Just for comparison, the original drive ran 160K/sec, and the new drive runs 450K/sec. Quite an improvment. If your interested, let me know. If not, at least let me know the mail made it, I have my doubts....
