[comp.sys.amiga] Flight Simulators

kruger@16bits.dec.com (Bear with me) (03/14/88)

I have now seen Jet. Very nice!

When do we see Harrier, Interceptor, Gunship, etc.

Does anyone have reasonable knowledge of these products?

Help. I just bought an Amiga 500 w/ 1meg. Want to buy a flight
simulator. and was considering either f-16 or f-18. From packaging I
lean towards the F-16 package, as it seemed to have better documents
and support for my 1 meg.

thanks in advance

By all means, get Falcon. In my opinion, it's the best flight simulation for
the Amiga.

However, F-18 Interceptor is a good game although not as good a simulation as
Falcon.

I whole hardely agree, Falcon is the greatest. I have a friend with an St,
and also has Falcon. We connected the two machines together with a
null modem cable, and took off! It was amazing!

Yeah, I think this feature of direct connecting 2 computers (and of different
types no less) makes Falcon a PREMIER game for the Amiga. One feature you
might not be aware of is that when one computer is running the original Falcon
and the other is using Falcon:Operation Counterstrike mission disk, each
computer sees the graphics of their particular game. This means if I am using
the mission disk, I see the graphics from that game, and if someone else is
using the original, they see the originals graphics. A friend and I connected
his 2500 in 68020 mode to my 500 in 68000 :( and played. There was a small
slowdown in animation speed but having an unpredictable HUMAN competitor sure
makes up for that. We also tried connecting with our 2400 bps modems, forget
it...tooooo slow! If you have 9600 Dual Standard HSTs give them a try.

Next thing Spectrum Holobyte needs is a mission disk specifically made for
aerial combat situations. To make it interesting, how about having a DEEP
canyon and obstacles on the ground to do low level dogfighting around? Oooo,
my mouth is watering just thinking about it! :)

Yeah! And formation flying! The enemy gets to do it; you should too!

I have Falcon, F-16 Combat Pilot, F/A-18 Interceptor, and Flight Simulator
II. My favorite is definately Falcon. F/A-18 and Combat Pilot are also both
good combat simulators but the don't have the same feel of realism that you
get with Falcon.
You really never get in FA-18 or Combat Pilot a dogfight because of
medium range missiles. I personally like the dogfighting the best. Combat Pilot
has all of the latest weapons and includes weather and night missions ... I
enjoyed playing it for a long time (and still due) but if I had to keep just
one it would be Falcon. You should check your version of Falcon. V1.0 had
almost impossible landing parameters. They fixed this in V1.1 and offered an
upgrade free of charge to registered owners. Also Falcon has Operation
Counterstrike when you get tired of the missions that come with Falcon.
Also the main reason I got bored of FA-18 is that it became very easy after
a while, Combat Pilot is getting that way also, But Falcon on Colonel is still
not easy and I have had it for over a year and play it often. To answer your
question about F-16 Combat Pilot, If you have the money to spend and really
love flight sim. I would recommend it. I was happy with it. It makes a nice
change from Falcon now and then...

So don't use missiles. I agree it isn't all that hard to shoot down
a plane with an AMRAAM, but try it with guns. I suspect it might take
you a while, at least to get it down consistently.

By the way, we (my roomies and I) have developed a wish list for
F/A-18 II, or whatever it will be called:

   - A different city. San Francisco was a great choice for the
first one, but I have now explored every square mile of the
available terrain. May I suggest NYC as the next city?
   - (of course) More scenarios.
   - Modification of what happens when you ditch in the ocean.
Don't just have the plane sit there at 0 knots. Make it sink!
   - A "turbine failure" would immediately assume you no longer have
thrust - so make it that way - don't just freeze the throttle
        and pitch controls!
   - Make the working ceiling more than 40960 feet. How about if you
go higher than 60000 feet you get a flame out?

Please add to this list! :-)

Also nice would be:
   - If some of the missions started from the ground bases instead of that stupid carrier.
   - If you could destroy the scenery ( ie blow up buildings, etc.)
   - Have the maker be creative - maybe a UFO or something.

Recently, I tried loading Falcon onto my A2000 using floppies but
the darn thing wouldn't load properly. It would allow me to enter my code
from the code wheel but wouldn't load after that! I tried loading the
thing from CLI and a different Sys: directory, and it loaded fine, only it
didn't have all the sounds! I have the originals and tried them to and
only got the same results? Is it because of my hardware? I have a 40meg
Hardframe but that shouldn't do anything. It's been a long time since I've
played it, but I remember it loading fine on my computer before!
Also, does anybody know how to sink the submersible carrier in
F-18 Interceptor by EOA? Answers to these problems would be very welcome!
