[comp.sys.amiga] ECS/UK Tech. Support

phupp@warwick.ac.uk (S Millington) (11/19/90)

Does anyone from Commodore know why Commodore UK has closed it's
technical support to the public. Any technical support people here need now
has to go through their dealer! This is fine if you bought thru a "good"
dealer, but what about the majority? Or those who bought mail order?
Secondly could someone from commodore comment about the following extract
from "Amiga Computing Magazine" Dec 90 - reproduced without permision of
course:-)

#quote begins

" Danger UXB:

Something not so wonderful may be happenning in the not too distant
future. Remember all the scare stories of Amiga viruses living in
battery-backed clocks? Remember rumours of viruses that could destroy your
Amiga?
Now, with the aid of the new ECS chipset on the very latest Amigas -
currently only fitted to the 3000, but available soon for all Amigas - it
is possible for a virus to blow up your monitor!
I'm not going to tell you exactly how to do it in this column, that would
be stupid, but the new Denise chip has to do some special tricks to be able to
produce the new video modes, and if you fiddle with these you could send
signals to your monitor that could damage it.
What if you write a program that crashes and just happens to write to the
wrong register? Just make sure your code keeps clear of any register above
$dff1bf."

#quote ends

A comment from someone in the know would be appreciated, before I
consider upgrading to ECS. And before Atari start using this as a selling
point of the ST:-)
