[comp.sys.amiga] 14MHz A500 -- has anybody done this?

sl195@cc.usu.edu (A banana is not a toy) (11/20/90)

I've finally got a serious question:

Has anybody tried the 14MHz A500 hardware hack? (Using a D-FF to divide
Agnus' 28MHz clock by two, and connecting it to the 68k's clock in?)
From what I hear there's about a 70% increase in speed (not 100% due to
the custom chips still cruising at 7MHz). I've got some fairly detailed
instructions on doing so.

I'm thinking about trying it, and was wondering if anybody else has done
so and had the computer freak.

Ok, first of all you are maybe looking at a 15%-30% increase. Second:
This hack does not take into account the E-clock. Now while this may not
cause too many problems on the 500 (I've only tried it on a 2000) it creates
major chaos in a 2000 (especially if you have expansion cards). One other
problem you may encounter is that, since it accelerates the E-clock, your
drives will attempt to run at twice normal speed. Hard drives will function
fine but unless you have a drive that can operate at this speed (I do), you
won't even be able to boot the system.

IF we can solve the E-clock problem I'll try to put the solution together and
post it.
