[comp.sys.amiga] Upgrade my 2000, or get a 3000?

sanders@vax1.acs.udel.EDU (Robert M Sanders) (11/27/90)

Hello World,
I've been mulling this over for a bit, but am now seriously thinking
about either upgrading my 2000 with additional hardware, or attempting to
sell it outright and get a 3000. What I'm hoping for is some suggestions
as to possible courses of action to take. I've listed current hardware,
desired performance, and some other information below, along with some
questions that I've been asking. Any help would be appreciated. Please
e-mail responses to 'sanders@brahms.udel.edu'. Many thanks....

                                                   Rob

Background: My Ami arrived home in Dec of 1987, and is a base 2000, ie
one meg ram, 68000, old Agnus, etc, external 3.5" drive,
               1084 monitor,Supra 2400 external modem, Star NX-10 printer.

Usual usage: Graphics programming (fractals, raytracing [yeah, pretty slow]),
some games, school work (5th year comp sci major, general
               messing around with the system.
Future plans: Futher programming, including MIDI work, messing w/UNIX,
                  possible some networking.

   Prospective Machine:
                68030 running at 25 mhz(w/appropriate FP),3+megs of
ram, 100mb hd, AT or 386 BridgeCard, Amax, UNIX.
   Possible additional goodies:
               MIDI equipment, audio digitizer.

   Questions: 1) Assuming I upgraded the 2000 w/an 68030 card,
additional memory, appropriate chips (fat Agnus, etc),
would it still be 'essentially' the same as the 3000?
By essentially read 'anything that ran on a 3000 would
run on the 2000 with the above mods'.
              2) Cost comparisions. An eyeball guess (primarily on hardware)
puts upgrading the 2000 to be less than getting the 3000,
                  including educational discount.
              3) Future expansion. The 2000 has more expansion slots
(at least I think it does) than the 3000. After all
the additional mods have been made, would the 2000 still
have more slots available to it that a comparable 3000?
              4) AT or possible 386 BridgeCard. The last thing I heard
was that the AT BridgeCard wasn't working in the 3000.
Is this still the case, or was I hearing pure static.
As a side note, are there any plans for a 386 BridgeCard
that are for a true full 386 chip?

                                          Again, many thanks.....
