[comp.sys.amiga] System 2.0 on A500's

MBS110@psuvm.psu.edu (11/15/90)

There are nasty rumors flying around... one, will new A500's be shipped
with 2.0 when it is released? A rumor stated that A500's will continue
to be shipped with 1.3 Kickstart in order to keep it compatible with
the video games (?!!) Two, when 2.0 is released, what is the likely
cost of the upgrade? As I recall 1.2 -> 1.3 was something like $40,
and that included new ROM chips as well as the new Workbench. Now
someone has posted saying that the 1.3 -> 2.0 upgrade will cost
"a couple hundred dollars." This is almost as bad as no upgrade at
all; most A500 owners, and many A2000 owners, would probably be
reluctant to pay such an exorbitant price. Please tell me it's just
a rumor, and nothing more...

Please ignore the rumors. There is currently no information on
the availability or cost of 2.0 upgrades for any machine except
the A3000.

Even if the new machines will be shipped with KS 2.0 & WB 2.0 it'll be a while
before anyone buying a new machine gets one because the dealers will want to
get rid of their old KS 1.3 machines. I know it took months before dealers
would sell 1.3 machines.

Commodore had BEST find an economical way to keep the A500's in
business! If they should make it unfit to upgrade to 2.0 standards ALOT
of people will be mad! I estimate that over HALF of the Amigas sold are
A500's (33% a2000's, 15% a1000's, and 2% a3000/mutant machines).
Browsing through a CAT price list I found that the BlitterChip (89.00)
and the new Denise (44.95) would tally to 135, plus the newkickstart
(~$40) and software (~$20), plus the fact that the A500's need a special
wiring to rig up 1meg chip ram(labor $30)..the total comes to $225....

They HAVE to offer a DEAL package. Like to whole kit-and-kabboddle for
125 or something.....

(Or should I be worried that they will do nothing.....they've made WB2.0
to run under ks1.2 and other PRIMITIVE materials....ugggggh
 what will they do!??)

Please don't speculate about these issues. When a decision is made,
it will be released through the appropriate channels. The rumors
only hurt the Amiga market. Please be patient.

Ken,
I know this isn't CATS' responsibility but it would help us users to be
patient if Marketing (who used to post items on the net) would post
the announcements that have been made. I am sure you would appreciate it if
OFFICIAL COMMODORE (e.g. Marketing) eased some of your burden with us users
by posting releases. I know they did it on C'Serve. Why not here?

You and all the other CATS poeple here have done a great job helping us learn
more about our machine. You don't need the extra burden of doing Marketing's
job too. They have Net Access see if you can convince them to use it. :-)

Thanks for all your work and time spent on-line!

Name the dealer. My dealer, Software Link (White Plains, NY) was selling 1.3 machines the moment he got them. He also went back and retro-fitted all his existing stock.

The A500 1 Meg CHIP modification will void your warranty, as of today. This is because some A500 it works others it doesn't. Also make sure you have some FAST memory available otherwise you'll get in trouble when something wants to put it's buffers into FAST memory. (ala Hard Drives.)

Yeah, right. That means the dealer is paying around $55-$60 for the parts. I don't think Commodore can sell them at that level and still turn a profit. Which is why they make the Amiga, they are not just doing it because it's a great machine.

Maybe so. Still, I've been really surprised with just how patient the
netfolk have been. Enough 3000's have been shipped now that people
with other models should have been experimenting like mad to get
various parts of WB 2.0 to run on them. Still, there seems
to have been very little activity like this...

Lots of activity. Just not much blabbing.

Yes - but wouldn't that be piracy ??

If I were to do that I would'nt blab about it on the net.

Disk drives, and I would guess (?) hard drives, place
their buffers exclusively in chip ram, not fast ram. There are
some stupid programs which require fastram, but don't forget that
512K A500s have none and work just fine.
