[comp.sys.amiga] A3000 & A3000/UX questions

lipo@vms.macc.wisc.edu (Pat Lipo) (11/28/90)

Hello... I've been in the process of disposing of my Apple IIgs :-) and have
been searching for a new computer. I had it narrowed down to a NeXTstation
or an Amiga 3000, and finally decided to go with the Amiga, which seems to
have pretty much everything I wanted except *REAL* UNIX. Right before I go
out and buy the 3000 I saw the small feature in Byte about the new UNIX
Amiga. Can someone answer some questions, as I am disgustingly naive
as far as Amigas go right now:

--Is this machine just an Amiga 3000 with UNIX capability (i.e. it runs the
workbench like a normal Amiga, and you can start up X and UNIX at will) or
is the workbench not even the base environment anymore (i.e. it defaults toUNIX.)

--Sort of on that same note, if the latter is true, is the compatibility with
regular applications up to the (not perfect) par of the regular 3000?

--Also, when will this machine be available? My university doesn't seem to
recognize Amigas as something worth selling, so are there any projections as
to when it will be out for the general public?

--8 megs and 100Mb hard drive seems like a lot, but will the UNIX stuff take
up most of the space? (i.e. is the 200Mb system almost necessary for regular
use?)

--I guess you can get a high-res monochrome monitor or a regular color one.
Is the color one the same monitor sold with the regular 3000? Are the two
monitors the same price?

Also, one general question regarding the 3000 itself: Obviously the monitor
that comes with the system has the double scan rate needed to run the
flicker fixer. However, is it a Multiscan monitor? The reason I ask this
is that I eventually will want a Bridgeboard for which I may get a VGA
card. I don't want to have to get another monitor if I can avoid it.
If not, will your average multiscan (not Multiscan) monitor work with both
the Amiga and VGA? Forgive me if I'm making any stupid assumptions here,
as I'm pretty new to all this.

Anyway, Sorry this was so long.
  Later,
Pat
