A number of people (including myself) have been wondering exactly what
Maple does. I came across this article describing the new version
of Maple for the Sun and thought it might be of interest to others...
Maple V for Sun Workstations
Waterloo Maple Software is now shipping Maple V for
SPARC based and Sun 3 families of workstations. Maple V is a new
version of the interactive computer algebra system used for symbolic and
numerical computations.
The release features a new graphical interface and 3D graphics.
Maple is built upon industry standards such as UNIX, the X Window System
TCP/IP and Postscript. With its library containing over 2,000 functions
for almost all areas of mathematics, Maple can be used for almost all areas of
mathematics. Maple can be used almost anytime accurate computation is needed.
"With its new features, Maple V is the clear choice for solving the
problems of today's engineers. Our release for the Sun is a strategic move
because it addresses one of Maple's largest customer bases," says Ron Neumann,
chief executive officer.
Maple can be used to develop sophisticated analytical models to deal
with difficult problems. Its algebraic engine and 3-D graphing capabilities
allow users to manage and visualize complex scientific and engineering
information in new ways.
Introductory price for Maple V for Sun is US$2,495.
