[comp.sys.amiga] Everything you always wanted to know about the A590

martijn@dnlunx.pttrnl.nl (Reinalda M.) (12/06/90)

Everything you always wanted to know about the A590,
               but were afraid to ask.

I bought the A590 with the standard 20MB harddisk in it. Indeed,
this ain't a very fast HD if you're used to working with other
harddisks, but it's still about 10 times faster than an amiga
floppy drive (Deluxe Paint III loads in about 1.5 or 2.0 secs to the
first selection screen). So, a couple of days ago a friend of
mine came along and brought his 50 MB Harddisk (took it out of
his 486 machine). It wasn't an SCSI drive so we took out the A590's
HD and plugged his one in. After the usual formatting etc. we
copied a load of programs on it and tried to boot it up.
Guess what ? It loaded... and FAST !!!!!! After grabbin' my
chin from the ground I loaded a couple of programs (for comparisson :
DPAINT III in about 0.1 seconds). I copied a 1.8 Meg animation
to RAM (yes, I've got the 2 Meg's installed in the A590), and it only
took about 2 or 2.5 seconds (that's almost 900K/sec !). I must tell
you that I optimised the HD with B.A.D to get this performance, but
still 900K/sec ain't no catpiss (:-) ha,ha Dutch expressions sound
funny when translated.
OK, to the point now. What I'm trying to say here is that the A590
INTERFACE definitely is good value for money. I haven't had the
chance yet to try the SCSI port, but I'm pretty sure this'll work
just as good. Appart from that, the 2 Meg extra RAM ain't bad either.
It enables me to run some serious video applications on my A500,
3D-picture rendering programs work fine etc. Conclusion : All the
'A590 is so slow, it don't offer me much' nagging is really bullshit.
Once again Commodore didn't dissapoint me, the Amiga keeps amazing me.

See ya,
Martijn Reinalda.

Note : All opinions above are mine, and no one elses.
Do with it what ya like.
