[net.general] Parsnips

evansr@yale-com.UUCP (Ronald Warren Evans) (02/05/84)

     I am lost.

There is a poem, I know, which ends with something very like the phrase
"ten frozen parsnips hanging in winter." This phrase refers to the author's
fingers -- indeed, if I remember correctly, fingers-as-vegetables is one of the
central metaphors of the poem, which deals with the hardships of winter living.

My girlfriend, who has poor circulation, has become enamored of this poem,
even offering to buy dinner for anyone who can discover her its author and
title. Since I am, naturally, enamored of my girlfriend, I also yearn to
ah, *unearth* this mysterious vegetable/poet. Please help me.

It may help you to know that this poem appeared on the 1983 English Lit
Advanced Placement Test, given by the College Board to high school students.

Please send me a reply if you have any information on this poem. You'll
warm my heart and my girlfriend's fingers.
