[comp.sys.amiga] How to show off an Amiga?

andrewsr@romulus.rutgers.edu (Rich Andrews) (12/10/90)

Hello All.

For the past month or so I have dropped by a couple of Amiga dealers
in my area. I have been very disappointed with their "demos".

So, I have decided to bring a small set of PD software with me to each
of the places that I visited and a) teach the dealer how to use them,
and b) give them to the dealer. I will bring along a complete listing
of the Fish disks, my phone number, and a number/address of the
nearest users group.

(I mean really, one of the dealers I went to had 2 things to show on
his 3000: Dpaint and the animation given by C=).

I want to develop a small set of high quality demos. Question: What
programs are *necessary* to this set?

One of my picks is Fish 196 with the stunning HAM pictures. I also
like the game Drip and the on-line fish list Aquarium.

(If you could only show 1-3 animations, which ones would they be?)

One of the strong points of the Amiga is its user base. Lets get the
word out.

Thanks,
-Rich

Well,

We had a demo about a month ago on Campus and among the things demoed,
we had a machine with Intuitracker in the background playing modules and a
Sculpt 3D anim running in front. We also had AmigaVision demoing a
presentation.

Equipment: Intuitracker can be gotten at abcfd20.larc.nasa.gov
along with the 40+ modulefiles(music) in
                   /incoming/amiga/NoiseTracker-Modules

Animations? look around. Many of the nice ones I got
from the same place. ie abcfd20.larc.nasa.gov

                   AmigaVision -> C=

BTW: You'll need to put these on a hard drive. Also intuitracker might
not work on a 3000. Works funny on a 2500.

Great idea rich, but, the only real problem I have with this that that
users will have to constantly check on the dealers to make sure that they
are properly presenting the Amiga, I too have gone to a dealer where their
amigas just sat idle why the salespeople know nothing about the machine
Unfortunantly it is rampant everywhere. This isn't to say that there are
not really good dealers out there, it is just that there are more bad
ones than anything else. Also unfortuanantly, this not the users problem
to correct (although we could, it would take a nationwide effort to do
(which I would gladly join in order to get the Amiga recognized)), I think
this is all C='s responsibility to discover and correct.

Although I think a lot of dealer's need a quick kick in the pants by the
users.....

C=, YOU NEED TO FIX YOU DEALERS, AND QUICKLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, ultimate choice.

I love to demo the Amiga, too, and still. I love to do this very
theatrically (sp?) by starting with simple things like showing
"normal" IFF pictures, drawn/ray-traced/digitized (to show all these
ways to create a picture with an Amiga), then just demonstrate
Preferences with all the nice tools for color adjustment and
pointer definition, and, and,... When it comes to animation, I still
like the old Fields demo, but there are newer ones existing now
(e.g. those by me :-). You see, all these things mentioned up to
now are relatively small files, you can put many of them on one
disk. Then for a real big animation, there's Walker (but this is
only suitable for an installed HD), also good-ole Juggler is
always suitable. And for sound, you again can show different ways
to produce it, either with real notes through Sonix or with some
digitized sound (I love that alarm clock with that cry from a
Fish disk, sounds like the cry in Impossible Mission).

This is a good idea BUT... I have done what you suggest, giving dealers easy
to use demos for the amiga showing off sound and graphics mainly. The dealers
use them a couple of times and then they let the machine show off the
workbench hand again :-(. It is certainly worth a shot but don't expect too
much. Dealers in general know nothing or less about what they sell and are
only interested in getting their pay and go home.

The best animations I have seen don't work on 680x0 machines, Sorry.

I try, I try :-)

All too true. I drove 2 hours to my nearest C= dealer after calling about
KS 2.02 for my A3000 only to be brushed off by one of the salespeople
with an unfriendly, "No, we don't have it. We lost the disk."

Of all of the anims/demos that I have gotten from the Net, only Walker2
has not worked (not enough memory...sigh...:) NewTek demos 1&3 work under
1.3 on the A3000, Charon is one of the most beautiful anims I have ever
seen on this machine, and, of course, the Juggler really blows people's
minds! I think your idea is great, Rich. Keep on tryin'!
