[comp.sys.amiga] Cltd HD crash

steiner@informatik.uni-kl.de (Donald Steiner) (12/11/90)

Hi there,

after years of reliability my system has crashed. I have two major
questions:

- What is the name & location of the company which still services Cltd
stuff? (It appeared a while ago, but I misplaced the info.)

- Has anybody had a similar experience / recommendations?:

The system is an Amiga 1000 with Microbotics memory, Cltd HD &
Controller and printer all plugged into an under-the-monitor power
switch / surge supressor unit, plugged into an (almost-)uninterruptible
battery-backedup 1400 Watt (I think) power supply (I forget what the
abbreviation is - let's say UPS). This setup worked without fail for
over two years; in the meantime I'm in Germany and my wife is using it
(constantly) still in Texas. (More details as to hardware setup can be
provided if necessary.)

We leave the power on almost all the time.

One night my wife woke up to the UPS' alarm screaming, the monitor and
the hard disk "smoking". She turned it all off and, not one to react
hastily to situations, went back to sleep.

The next morning she determined that the monitor was out and the hard
drive wouldn't come on. Everything else (CPU) worked.

Q1: What caused the meltdown? The monitor burning out after months of
being on, power glitch dominoing to HD? Or the power strip or the UPS
malfunctioning?

After replacing the monitor and getting a local store to hook up a new
power supply to the hard disk every thing worked. (Well, the CPU
couldn't access info off the HD, but I think that's clear - it needed
to be reformatted.)

She later tried to boot it up again, and "the next thing I knew the HD
was smoking ..." She proceeded to turn it off, and is waiting till I
come back next week to take a look at it.

Q2: What is the cause of the second meltdown? The same answer to Q1
(recall, we have a new/different monitor) or could the newly installed
power supply of the HD not have been up to spec?

Unfortunately, there is no one in Austin who is willing to service
Amigas.

Thanks for your help.
