Just a trivia fact for those who may be interested...
There is a (safe) way to accelerate that break in period of a new car.
The whole purpose of driving a ways before cutting loose is to give the
valve lifters a chance to mate with the camshaft. The initial wear "grinds"
a contact patch into the lifters so that the sideload produced by a
rotating cam lobe doesn't oval out the lifter bore, or break a cam lobe.
In a very new car, it also allows the various crank/cam bearings to mate
with their races.
So what you do is: Run the car for 5 min at about 2000RPM, then a 10
second burst of high (4-5000RPM) in sucessive bursts. (ie up to 5000, down
to 2000, up to 5000 for 10 seconds, not 10 seconds at 5000) followed by
another 5 min stretch at 2000, followed by another burst cycle, etc. for
20 min. When you are done, change the oil. Ta Daa! Done. DO NOT LET IT
IDLE DURING THIS PROCEDURE. (you need the oil pressure)
I used this this summer after installing a new camshaft in my Chevelle
(282in/292ex ad dur, lift .465/.485) and I've had no problems.
Now when I drop from neutral to 1st at 3000RPM, I can get the front
wheels off the ground...

(Is this what they call Multitasking? :-) I once heard a tip for that break in period (BTW, if you would translate the German word for this directly, it would get "drive in", funny?): The best method to get the motor through its youth is "to be a bad driver", driving hectically at very different speeds and different RPMs. As this poster said, it is necessary to have the motor run at all different speeds and at rapidly changing speeds.
