[comp.sys.amiga] Raw Samples from Text Files!

C503719@UMCVMB.MISSOURI.EDU (Baird McIntosh) (12/13/90)

Since MED loads either IFF or RAW sound samples, you can manufacture the
latter (ie. raw samples) using a simple text editor and a little tweaking.
I'm not sure what the default play rate is for raw samples (cycles/second),
but you can make simple tone instruments with small (less than 256 byte)
text files. Using the table of ASCII values in the Amiga Basic Manual,
you can determine the amplitude of the sound with the characters you use.

I know what you're thinking; what is this guy talking about??? Perhaps an
example will better illustrate:

  Load a text editor (I suppose ED will do). Now type the following
  characters, being sure to get the correct number of characters:

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
  |                              /                              |
  1                            32  33                           64
  You want to type 32 tilde's followed by 32 plus signs, then don't press
return, but just save the file as is.  Now load MED and load the file you
created as a sample.  Go to the sample menu and set the repeat start to
zero and the repeat length to 64.  Wow, you've created an instrument!  It
should be in tune with other MED instruments, too.  You can make more
interesting sounds and make higher or lower octave instruments.  To transpose
the above instrument up one octave you just use half the tilde's and half
the plus signs (16 and 16).
A lot of the sounds you create will be similar to C64 SID chip sounds, but
if you want some basic sounds, just use your text editor!  If for some reason
somebody is actually interested in this stuff, email me. :-)  Oh, one last
thing... using MEDs various effects (vibrato, portamento, crescendo, etc)
really livens up these basic sounds.
(And if this article or these tips show up in .info or AmigaWorld, I expect
 full credit and normal article rates... :-)  yeah, right!)
