[net.general] Flames regarding my test message.

sb@cvl.UUCP (Babu Srinivasan) (02/21/84)

I am so sorry to have put a test message on net.general .
I am a newcomer here and so have pity on me.I usually read very little
netnews and transmit very rarely.I wanted to send something important
and before doing that I wanted to make sure that messages really get
sent.Hence the test message .I was not aware of the existence of
net.test ,a group meant solely for testing purposes .I had also not
read about this in net.announce. There are so many newsgroups that
a newcomer does not know what to read and what not to read .I was
not even aware that people in Australia and Europe will be receiving
the test message that I had sent. There is no excuse for ignorance.

I am overwhelmed by the amount of mail I got
from people admonishing me for having put a test message in
net.general . Thankyou for the information and I will not repeat
this mistake.

Now ,the reason for this letter. One of those
admonishing letters irked me enough to make me want to reply .
That particular message is included here so that you know what I
am talking about.

(( Your test was received here. I trust that it was
really necessary to post it to net.general, the ONE newsgroup on
which unnecessary traffic should be kept out of so that everyone
will subsribe.I am sure that people in Australia and Europe
appreciated knowing that you were testing the news, and gladly
paid for the satellite charges for transmitting this important
message.

))
I can understand people getting irritated when they get test
messages on net.general .But to go to the extent of saying that
people in Australia and Europe pay satellite charges and get
this useless message is ridiculous .The amount of junk that is
being transmitted on net news makes me shudder.Ofcourse ,one man's
food is another man's poison. Many people read news very selectively
and ignore the rest. By his argument lot of people are unnecessarily
paying for 'news' that is not newsworthy to them.

There is no need for so much sarcasm in trying to
explain something to a tyro.

Please ,no more flames regarding this subject.
