[comp.sys.amiga] need suggestion for a monitor for A3000, and questions..

coxc0011@ucselx.sdsu.edu (David Tse) (12/23/90)

I'm looking for a monitor to go with my A3000, which I didn't buy with
the A1950 for some reasons.

I want a monitor which is:
1. has nice screen, fine dot pitch and good color.

2. supports overscans to display whole screen, no shrinking .
* This is quite important for me, as I want a bigger screen during overscan.

3. has 50Hz and 60 Hz in vertical scan range so I can use PAL mode.

4. best if it goes down to 15kHz horizontal sync, but I don't think I
need the 1280x?00 mode as much, so one which takes 31.5kHz is fine
   enough.

5. best if it is switchable to 240V AC, either externally or internally,
so I can take it to another country. If not, can I use a step-down
   transformer for a monitor??

All suggestions, experiences welcome. Please also stated which monitors
need a special cable, and or buffer chip for the sync line, etc.

Specific questions:
1. I really like the Sony Trinitron tube, is there any Sony or Seiko
monitor which fits the above criteria?

2. Does the Mitsubitshi DiamondScan AUM 1381 handle overscan well? anything
to do with its ability to display composite video? How is the composite
quality for watching TV/VCR? How does the mode work which puts both the
RGB and composite on screen at the same time?

3. I just borrow an NEC Multisync 3A (the original old model) from my
friend, horizontal is 15.5kHz to 35kHz, but the vertical is 56Hz to 62Hz
manually, non interlace, does it mean it won't sync on PAL mode? How will
the interlace signal be treated? I haven't tested it yet, until I receive
   my A3000.

4. Does the 31.5kHz video port has same pinouts as an regular VGA type, so
I can plug one in and not blow it? besides the point that some monitor
needs the buffer chip on the sync line (forgot which, and why).

5. I saw a monitor called TVM 3+, a Taiwan brand multisync which fits most
of my criteria, switchable AC power, hor. and vertical sync fits all Amiga
mode, 0.28 dot-pitch, don't know about overscan and quality. Anyone can
   comment on TVM monitors?

I know this is a lot of questions, but it's hard to find out otherwise,
and my account here is expiring at the end of the year: Dec. 31,1990. I
won't have access until sometime in Jan. Please e-mail if it's convenient,
but I'll also check the groups, I really want some suggestions.

Thanks a lot in advanced,
David Tse
