[comp.sys.amiga] Battery backed up clock not found.

cosell@bbn.com (Bernie Cosell) (08/06/89)

What is my 2000 trying to tell me? I called a dealer who suggested that it
means that the battery may be dead, but this same dealer also thought it would
be trivial to change the battery, but upon further interrogation he confessed
that (a) he didn't know WHAT battery it took [but he really thought it was some
standard buyable-at-Radio-Shack one], and that (b) I couldn't really just drop
a new one in: the thing was soldered onto the board. All of that lead me to
believe that he was just guessing and before I start disassembling and
soldering on my Amy, I thought I consult the collected widsom of you-all:

It occurs to me that if the battery is really soldered onto the board
and NO normally-available documentation mentions the actual existence
of the battery, much less what type it is or how (or how often) to
replace it, then I would guess that C-A is trying to tell me pretty
loud and clear that the batteries aren't supposed to just die. Is
there some other possibility? I was doing some hacking (trying to get
Ferrari Formula I to run off of my hard disk) and the machine had just
trashed itself and crashed (real interesting: patterns streaming
across the screen, the control LEDs on my modem went wild, etc). I
ctrl-A-A'ed the beast and it came up complaining about its clock. I
tried "setclock reset" but it, too, just complained about "clock not
found". And there I sit.

* Is there something more I can try BEFORE I disassemble my Amy?
* Assuming I end up replacing the battery, any advice on how to go about it?

Thanks!!
  /Bernie\

This is largely based on my memory of past c.s.a. postings. If my
ramblings can be verified, or a real solution can be found, it might
be useful in the intro posting.

This happened to me earlier. I "fixed" it by doing nothing. About the
second or third day I booted, the problem simply disappeared.

As I understand it, a register in the clock is getting trashed. The normal
startup then can't find a (proper) clock. The solution is to get the
registers in the clock back the way they should be. Between version 1.2
and 1.3 of the "setclock reset" commands, one works and one doesn't. (I
believe 1.2 works.(?)) Another possible fix is the program which claims
to "cure" the fabled "clock virus". Apparently it just resets the registers
in the clock. (Available at an anti-viral archive site near you.)

Last night the same thing occured on my Amiga 500 while running with MachII
(V2.5) in the background and trying to run the setup program for TagBBS
(1.03 I think). I had the same display of junk on my screen and modem, when
I ctrl-A-A'ed, I too saw this Battery Backed Up Clock Not Found. I was
hoping it would clear it self up by tonight (I haven't been home yet).
I am interested in the problem, just wanted to tell you it wasn't any type
of copy protection. Does anybody know the solution. If it helps my Amiga
is only two months old.

Hi all,

A number of people seem to be having trouble with their battery
backed up clocks not working. It's your actual epidemic. So here's a
little ditty that Bob Page posted in May. It's real small, so I hope
nobody minds too much my posting it again. Cut it out, uudecode, and
zoo -extract. Source, executable, and icon included. Oh yeah, watch
the .sig at the end...

We had an early A2000 do the same thing to us after it sat around working
30-40 hours straight in a relatively warm (30 C) room. A chip had to be
pulled off the board and replaced...NOT typically a user-servicable part.

I suggest you contact C-A and see if they'll fix it for ya!

I had the mysterious "Battery backed clock not found" problem for
quite a while. I was convinced that it was because my battery was dead.
Setclock reset seems to have fixed it and I couldn't be happier (actually,
I could, but you get the idea ...)

The setclock to use is from 1.3. 1.2 setclock doesn't recognize the
option reset and ARP 1.3's gave me the same "Battery backed clock ..."
 error.

(Does anyone really know what time it is ... Does anyone really care?)

I think what may have happened (what I do to fix this problem) is that there
is/was a very low amount of charge left in the battery, so fully discharging
it and leaving your Amiga on will re-charge the battery, making it okay for
quite some time.

This little discharging trick only needs to be done every 2 years or so (or
something around then, some very HUGE amount of time).

Folks,

After running one of the qmfleg demos that was in the demos directory at the
New Xanth, my clock went for a little walk.

Now I get the battery backed up clock not found error when using setclock load!

I've tried setclock reset to no avail. I've heard of another program that will
reset all the clock's registers thereby returning it to normal. Could somebody
tell me where I could find this puppy?

Thanks as always.

The first thing to try (and what worked for me) is the 1.2 setclock program.
Apparently the 1.3 version is not nearly as good at finding the clock as
the 1.2 version was...

Alternately I have seen a program to fix the clock on a couple bbs's around
here. I have no idea if they work, but they claim to fix the clock.

About your clock dying, I caught a virus about 6 months ago which
killed my clock and made it do the same thing. The way to kill it is
one of two things:

1)Use "setclock reset"
2)Take out the battery on the clock board and put it back in after
about 20 seconds.

My battery wouldn't come out (it's soldered to the board), so I shorted
the two terminals together (VERY DANGEROUS!!!! Don't do unless you want
to risk it!). It scrambled clock RAM. I turned on my machine and
setclock found the clock. I set the time and date and no problems
since.
This may or may not be your problem, but if it is, this should help.

Your problem is that setclock searches the internal clock at two addresses,
$D80000 and $DC0000 by looking for changing register values. If your clock
is halted, setclock finds nothing !!!

The only thing to do is writing #$6 at $DC0035 or just call restartclock
to do the job and your internal clock is back again.

This was fixed a long time ago, on workbench 1.3.2; Setclock RESET just
blasts away, not checking if the clock is alive.
