[comp.sys.amiga] uucp

spencer@eris.UUCP (09/12/87)

Well, this is a cry for help...

I have had my hands on UUPC and SLIP for almost two weeks now and I have yet
to have a chance to use them. I figure from the readings that SLIP will let
me network my Amiga to a SUN or a VAX, or an Amiga, but I have yet to under-
stand how. I hooked two Amigas together (for lack of a Sun or VAX) and I
ran SLIP on both (the program called NET) and up came a window, but no help,
other than a list of commands. Nothing I did had any real consequence. So
I started asking around and no one I know has tried it yet.

So I start asking about UUPC. Seems that people want to do something with it
but no one is yet. I really want to hook UUPC up, so that I can get Usenet
directly into my BBS. I just bought a 40 meg (that will last a week supporting
Comp.Sys.Amiga) hard drive so that I can do this stuff.

The real question of this posting is:

Who do I talk to about these networking protocols,
                    and/or
What books do I check out of the library,
                    and/or
Is anyone else having problems getting it up.

smith@aic.nrl.navy.mil (Russ Smith) (10/09/89)

Someone asked what UUCP was. It's a protocol/set of programs for sending
stuff back and forth between machines in a somewhat friendly automated
manner. Originally stood for Unix-to-Unix Copy but has moved far beyond that
operating system. A number of UUCP-functionial-similar clones are available
for the Amiga. All are somewhat buggy but never-the-less perform a
valuable service for many people (including this author).

UUCP allows one to send mail, receive mail, and copy files from one machine
to another. For example, THIS message was written using a "mail" program.
The message was forwarded to another site automatically when that site's UUCP
daemon called my home machine. From that machine the message was automatically
forwarded to the net. All this required me only to do:

		mail nrl-aic!udel.edu!amiga-relay

and type in the message. The rest was handled by the various UUCP (and other)
programs running on various machines (including my own). One can transfer
files just as easily. Assume there's an Amiga out there named "kumquat" that
my system knows about (let's say that machine calls mine once in a while).
I want to get that machine's file called "UUCP:spool/~/Cstuff.zoo". All I have
to do is: ^
[This is a trick to get
                                                    [around UNIX braindamage

	uucp kumquat!uucp:spool/~/Cstuff.zoo myfile

and the transfer will take place when kumquat calls my machine.

I use a 512k 2-3.5" floppy Amiga 1000 as a UUCP receiving/sending site
24 hours a day/seven days a week. This is UUCP V0.50, obtained (indirectly)
from William Loftus. Each day my site receives about 300K bytes of incoming
messages (amiga and aviation, plus a little personal mail and occassionally
a transfered file or two). This requires at least two reboots of the Amiga
per day due to memory being gobbled and never freed by the set of programs
which get invoked when incoming stuff "arrives". I disabled (via bit twiddling
the binary) an invocation of a "New mail has arrived" window which caused more
frequent crashes (not sure why, but the frequency went down dramatically and
can now definitely be traced to memory "slowly" disappearing).

C source and binary are available. The C source for the UUCP version discussed
is written for Lattice (I have Aztec...sigh). To actually USE the UUCP set of
programs you have to "hook yourself into" another machine that runs
UUCP-type stuff, since you have to do UUCP-to-UUCP...this is usually the step
of the UUCP installation that stops most folks. There are for-money sites that
will usually allow such registration if you can't find a site (or site manager)
who will do it for you.

An aside on MY UUCP installation -- As mentioned above, I get a fair amount of
messages daily, probably a hundred or two. Since I've only got floppies, the
transfers tend to take quite a while (they're DAMN slow, actually...). After
a couple months of use, the UUCP: disk starts squeaking (NOT the drive...the
actual DISK), implying it's getting worn out or something. At that point I
change disks (and chuck the old). I also tend to wear out the DF0: disk as
well since my 512k memory size doesn't permit placing many commands in memory.
These symptoms give me the heebie-jeebies when I consider installing UUCP
on an Amiga with a HARD drive...can't imagine throwing one of them out every
other month or so... I've looked over the source and decided that someday
I'll write a version that doesn't do too many UNIX-compatible things
(like logfile formats). This'll happen one of these days (RSN...). Anybody
got a good reference or two on the UUCP protocol? The GNU version of the
protocol implemented is obscure, to say the least...

The UUCP idea sounds pretty interesting since I have no access to UseNet
while I'm away from school. Anyone know of any sites in the Chicago area (free
or otherwise...) that will allow me to use them as a server? Thanks in advance.

Well, there's chinet, for starters; for others, consult comp.mail.maps
for Illinois (FTP-able from, say, uunet and elsewhere).

I would also like to know where to get it, and find out the current version
available. Currently only the beta version has been available (on a Fish Disk).
Hopefully it would be better documented than this beta version!

reason to get newsfeeds on my home machine. I tried to set up uucp but
have a little problems with it. If anyone would mind can you mail me

Any general info would also be welcome as I'm new at this(like
recommended hard drive space and bug reports, even sites that will pass
on newsfeeds). Please reply by mail.

Arg, this is frustrating...

On ux1.cso.uiuc.edu, Fred Fish disk #360, there is UUCP.zoo, measuring over
950k in size. How in the world am I supposed to get that on a floppy? I'd
like to start using UUCP, since we have a UNIX BBS in my area, but there's
no way I can download that file.

Well, if you intend to use UUCP, you're going to find lots of files to
download that aren't sized for any Amiga floppy. Two $$ solutions to
your problem are a harddrive and more ram. A $ solution is the new AED
1.4M or so floppy drive. The cheapo solution is to borrow a friend's
machine, or download the file onto a Unix host with zoo, take the file
apart, and repack it in two parts to store on floppy and use on your
machine.

Really, though, if there's 950K of compressed files there, they're going
to be a lot bigger unarchived, and you just aren't going to be using
them on a minimal configuration Amiga.

By the way, the packing efficiency of lharc is enough better than zoo
that that file probably would fit on a single Amiga floppy repacked as
an .lzh file, if the archive maintainers are listening; I usually get
about an extra 20% compression repacking a .zoo as a .lzh file.

It is all a bit odd, since presumably any Fish Disk, even downloadable,
once fit on an Amiga disk. Looks like someone got a little too clever
in building the archive and combined some things better left separate.

UnZoo the file on the host machine, and then archive portions of it until it
is within your size limit, then transmit those, changing floppies as they
become close to full.

If you cannot access the host machine at command level, then you're probably
not going to be able to achieve what you want to do. If you had a
reasonable amount of memory (2.5Mb) you could download it straight to
memory, and unZoo individual files from it onto floppy.

Running UUCP in a floppy environment would be my idea of a nightmare, but
that's my personal bias, and irrelevant to your wants and needs.

Good luck.

Well, it'd be a hassle to try running AmigaUUCP off of floppy anyway,

Hi. I'm sure that this has gone though the net a lot. In fact I
seem to remember skipping the articles...

I am attempting to run uucp from my amiga. Unfortunately, the Unix
documentation (what to do) is very sparse (I couldn't find any).
If anyone knows of any documentation for doing this or can relate any
stories can you please mail them to me.

Your local computer book store can help you find two books in the
Nutshell Handbooks series from O'Reilly & Associates, Inc., called Using
UUCP and USEnet, and Managing UUCP and USENet. The latter book
especially has an _excellent_ reputation. The publisher may be contacted
at 1-800-338-6887 outside California, or at 1-800-533-6887 within
California, or by post at 632 Petaluma Avenue, Sebastapol, CA 95472.

As far as UUCP for the Amiga, write to Matthew Dillon (Matt) at
dillon@overload.Berkeley.CA.US, about his AmigaUUCP 1.06 (or forthcoming
1.07) package, or send a message asking to be put on his mailing list to
amiga-uucp-request@overload.Berkeley.CA.US, for just correspondence, or
to amiga-uucp-patches-request@overload.Berkeley.CA.US for both
correspondence and software distributions. As far as I know, it's free.
