I have a suggestion to solve the drive clicking problem for drives that support it. Non-volatile RAM. If i remember correctly, the RTC chip has some battery backed-up RAM. Maybe this is too late for 2.0 OS, but why not use this RAM as configuration RAM. Then, if a certain bit is set, this may indicate that the drives are capable of "not clicking" and the appropriate code could be run. This way, even if I boot off a floppy disk, my drives would not click and I do not have to run any "noclick" programs.
