:Heh! I've been WAITING for a question like this for some time. Seems people
:don't know the PURPOSE of the NSF-sponsored Internet (re: ftp). Read on ...
:[BTW, "NSF" = National Science Foundation] The Director of BARRnet (Bay Area
: Regional Research network, affiliated with the NSF's Internet) started
:blasting people who were using the Internet for "personal" email.
:The charter of the NSF-funded Internet is for research and government-sponsored
:activities ONLY.
:One more point about "ftp" access: the uunet people have started Alternet
:which is NOT funded by us taxpayers, and THAT will be available for commercial
:and non-research use.

I'd like to take this oppurtunity to plug AlterNet. Our organization and
our NNTP neighbor switched over to uunet's internet, which has among other
things sped up news article propagation. (California to France and back
again in 4 hours for me, CA to Finland and back in 2 hours for a friend.)
When more sites join AlterNet, we won't have to worry about restrictive
government regulations.
